GF and I headed back to NPH around 6:30pm. 30 minutes (and 2 lost lures) later, we were joined by Hesbros. We were absolutely delighted to have someone help out a couple of harbor rookies! We started around 14th and made our way down to 9th.

The bite was really slow, but Hesbros was able to hookup into this nice spottie on the dropshot:

Me and Hesbros with the same spottie:

It was getting pretty late and I was almost ready to call it quits when out of nowhere, POW!!! BENDO!

Not sure what I had, but the drag was screaming. After a good fight it finally surfaced:

It was a fighter. Kept shaking around everytime we tried to land it, but managed to get a pretty good pic in:

We noticed that after all the shaking around, it was now barely hooked. It looks like Hesbros was contemplating whether or not to lip the hali :EyePop:

But in the end it fell off. Too bad we didn't have anything to land the fish with, and it definitely didn't feel like staying still enough for us to grab. At least we were able to snap some good pics and actually SEE the fish. Hesbros counted it as a catch. Thanks man.

Pretty good night of fishing. Something else peeled my drag earlier that night, but it broke me off cauz my drag was a little tight. Lesson learned. Hopefully the bite will pick up for us next time.

Hesbros, it was great meeting you! Thanks again for sharing all your knowledge and hooking us up with the big hammers and all the great tips. We really appreciate everything and we hope to fish with you again soon!

P.S. I examined my line this morning since that hali was darting around the pilings, and here is what I found:

I guess I will be swapping out my line for something a little more abrasion resistant!

Jaysuun, it was my pleasure meeting you and Tess (?) (otherwise know as G/F). It was nice to have company down there. I think it is great that your G/F finds an interest in fishing with you, it is quality time spent together that you will never forget. Even better is her determination to catch fish. She was casting non-stop all night! Her spottie will come soon.

Last night I did not think that Hali was legal, but after looking at the pics, it looks just legal or pretty darn close. I wish we could have got it out of the water for a pic and measure. After seeing the line, I think we both know what the outcome of bouncing the fish over the little wall would have been.

Like I said last night, I would love to host a trip for both of you on our boat sometime!

Check your PM, since it is on my way home, I may be there again tonight!

Later.....
Eddie

Tess: Thanks Eddie, I hope so too! Jason started me off on pier fishing up north about 3 years ago and I was "hooked!" I graduated to surf fishing soon after and we competed in who could catch more and bigger perchies. We then started trying out freshwater and competed in who could catch the most and biggest largemouth bass. (I think I won that battle, haha) Then when we moved down here, we hit up the beaches and piers for a while but wanted to try something new and that's how we ended up at NPH. So far he's beating me but I'm determined to make my comeback! Since you guys both caught yours last night on DS, I think I'm going to stick with that for now. Thanks again for all your tips and we look fwd to meeting up w you again sometime next week.

those halibut have some sharp teeth, hope you get a good abrasion resistant line, halibut aren't typically line shy.

Wow that's a monster hail! Too bad you couldn't measure or weigh it.

Ya I know, we unfortunately couldn't beach the fish and had nothing to land it with (boga grip or net). Will be a little more prepared next time... learning something new everytime we go.

Ya, it would've snapped off for sure! Oh well, after what had happened earlier that night, I was happy I got to see it that time. And about taking a trip on your boat, we would love to be your guests sometime!

Are you nuts? Well, that's definitely a good way to tell the difference between a flounder and a small halibut. Stick your finger in it's mouth and if it comes back, it's a flounder. I guess if you don't mind waiting until you cut the fish's head off before you can get your thumb out, try it! Take a net next time, homie.

Way to go on the fish!! nice sized hali too!! It's always nice to be able to fish with one of the NPH master fishermen(Eddie) while you're there. He showed me a few spots I hadn't been to before.
