Another boring day of slaying hali's. The challenge is not there anymore for me. The less I'm motivated to slay these hali's, the more I catch. For those that haven't caught a hali whether short or legal, I would like to recommend a few things:

1) Don't try so hard.
2) Before going, say to yourself "I could care less if I catch a butt or not, the important thing is I have my health and my family loves me (at least most of them do).
3) Take a shower right before you go so the butt doesn't smell anything "abnormal". Make sure you don't use any soap because this can cause a really bad scent if you end up having to go into the water for any reason.

Here are 2 of the 3 butts I caught. 1 legal only today (not in pics), but I did manage to hook up 2 sand sharks 1 of which took me almost 30 minutes to reel in. The luckycraft got snagged on the top fin. Amazing fight it was on my light gear (using 9 lb line). Both butts were caught drop shotting a basstrix (smelt color). I later tried dropshotting 2 basstrix at 1 time and pulled up a 23 incher. Normally I would have released, but I haven't had a nice piece of butt in awhile, so I decided I would settle for a nice butt meal instead.

Haha you make it sound so boring. So much so that I'm hesitant to congratulate you on your catch :D :D :D
Anyway, if I could get to the state you're in, I'd be so content. Unfortunately, I still have and am recovering from "moo-moo shock" and have only gone out to the beach a couple times since Memorial day, when I caught my limit off my very first boat trip :) It's things like that that make me not want to fish off piers or at the beach. Don't get me wrong though, the crave is slowly returning :) Especially for catching my first legal.

Try not using a proven halibut catching technique and fishing in spots known for holding halibut

That was my 2nd answer. First choice would be this:

Is the plastic u were using a baby smelt plastic?
D/S technique with what 1/2 oz weight?
Just curious, would like to duplicate your technique.
Never caught any halibut yet..
thanks and great catches...

My wife freaked out the other night when she was emptying my pockets to do the laundry. She found a few of those basstrix in my pocket and started to scream because she thought it was a bunch of worms. This was before she had my kid pull the "worms" out of my pockets and then she realized it was real fish. I got yelled out for carrying dead fish in my pockets. She still thinks they are real. I should ask her if she could bbq them for me tomorrow.

Those things are awesome in the water if you use the tap, tap, tap, reel techinque.

Caught 8 more butts today, 2 legals. All CPR so I can catch them again Monday. I did lose a HUGE one (estimate is 35+ inches) after it broke my line after 15 minutes of fighting. So, if any of you see a butt with two plastic basstrix in anchovy color sticking out of it's mouth, I caught it first!
I will post pics as soon as I can get the pics from my phone to my computer.

Use a palomar knot for a hook, leave about 12-20 inches of line at the bottom. Use drop shot weights 3/8 or 1/4 ounce depending on the depth of water. You don't need 1/2 because you will be moving the plastic onto shore. Tap, tap, tap, reel. Tap, tap, tap, reel. Keep doing this until the plastic is close to shore.
The key to tying the hook onto the palormar is to have the hook pointing upwards. This way when you put nose hook the plastic, you can allow it to swim top side up and get the real fish motion going with the taps.

There are tons of posts on this website in drop shot techniques with pictures.
