We were somewhere on the edge of san diego when the fun began to take hold......(a reference hunter s thompson fans will appreciate)
The morning started for me around 3am after a sleepless night. We all know what its like when your excited about an upcoming fishing trip. Olfishergal showed up at my place around 4 am and we were off to san diego to meet the rest of the weird band of fishers. After 30 minutes or so of being lost and hitting every damn red light san diego has to offer rich finally found us and headed us back to his palace. We loaded our gear into riches suv and off we were to meet the rest of the group.
we arrived at a local dan diego landing to find Joe (funjunkie) adir (iron shrimp aka narcolepsy boy aka snore master 3000) osito, victor101, and cappo, waiting for us and eager to hit the road. Rich immediately gave everyone the run down on proper operating procedure for heading across the border while myself and ofg headed to the cafe for some breakfast.
Crossing the border was as easy as pie, unfortunately we lost one of our party...joe and adir got held back. All i could hear on our walkie talkie was adir crying out to all the saints please dont hurt me im an american!!!!! Rich followed protocol and proceded to lead the remaining car following us deeper into mexico and hoped joe would remember the roads from his last expedition. About 20 miles later i hear a faint sign from our walkie talkie...it was adir, he sounded like a scared little lady wondering where we were up the road. Proceed on the road rich said we will slow down so you guys can catch up. Back on track with all 3 cars we proceeded down the road. Every couple of minutes adir would radio back to us wondering when we would eat! The ride down was perfect no signs of resistance no signs of trouble smooth sailing ahead.
A couple of hours later we arrived in dowtown san quitin where we made a stop for our essentials.....which for me meant lots and lots of booze!!! 36 pack of beer and a bottle of bacardi later we made our way to our final destination. We arrived to the warm welcome of our host and a cold bottle of pacifico and checked into our room.
The first day myself rich and adir headed out on an expedition to scope out some possible surf fishing spots for the good ol legend known as wingnut. I cant even begin to explain how beautiful it was to drive along a beach for a couple of miles not seeing anyone sunbathing or fishing. We arived at the end and exited the car to try some surf fishing. Adir made friends with an Ex pat. who said he had moved down to san quintin some 10 odd years ago and hasnt regretted it since. I can see why, beautful beach and a laid back atmosphere.
After about an hour so we decided to head back and find some food. We stopped at a hole in the wall taco shack which was probably someones front yard. I could tell rich was a little nervous as i was to see to federalis eating dinner there and staring us down. Adir made me laugh due to him asking if the tomatoes were ok to eat in the tacos even though he didnt care about the fact that he had just washed his hands in an outdoor sink before he ate!!! rich made a comment along the lines of yeah dont worry the dissentary and jardia will overide the tomatoes dumb ***!!!
we came back to camp to find out that everyone had already gone and ate at the old mill so we set up our room and prepared for the night with a couple of cold beers. Once everyone came out from there rooms we decided to hit the nearest food stop. Im going to save all the details as theyve been already explained. I will say that i am very very impressed by the amount of food osito and victor101 put down. i will also say that ive never seen a jew (iron shrimp aka adir) put down so much pork in one sitting!!!
we woke up the follwing day and headed out to our day of fishing which i will only describe as amazing. The ride out and morning was pretty brutal, we hit some serious swells which made myself and rich say oh **** a couple times. our pangadero was way more than ready for the rough terrain and made our trip as safe as possible and we quickly hit the hottest of spots san quintin had to offer. Whitefish lings and reds were being brought over the rails quickly and abundantly. about 3 hours into our expedition i started feeling the horrible signs of mal de mer ( sea sickness) my hands were shaking and i had the dreaded cold sweats along with the spins. I chummed over the side a couple of time and attempted to go back and fish, a couple of hours later it was round two for chumming. When i finished ofg made mention she had some dremamine on board so popped a pill and proceeded to the front of the panga to lay down and let it kick in, kick in it did and i proceeded to take a 2 hour nap. When i woke up i was fully recharged and ready to go so i went to the front where rich greeted me with a beer and some fresh bonita sahsimi. We finished out the off shore trip with some impressive white fish, reds, and ling cod in the well. Rich convinced pato (our pangadero) to head over to the white sea bass grounds. The trip was amazing watching an impressive amount of whales breaking the surface all around us in the bay. The only downer part was seeing how amazing the weather was inside the bay, sunny skies and calm water. we tried for white sea bass for about an hour before pato decided it was time time head in. We all enjoyed the bautiful scenery heading back in.
Fish filleted and gear packed into richs suv we headed back to our habitat where a very needed shower was had. Night time hit and we all headed over to the restaurant where a very a delicious meal of clams and fish was had. The manliest of men had pina coladas, we had beer and liqour. All i can say is that the night ended way to quickly. rich and i had a good time harrasing joe and adir in there room (reference the pic of me on the head)
We woke up the next morning and packed everything up and had some breakfast. Staying true to my name i had a couple beers some vodka and orange juice a shot of tequila and tried the pina colada to prepare for the long drive across good ol mexico.
we headed up mexico having laughs and sharing some great stories. we stopped at a little hole in the wall taco stand where we had some great food. This is where everyting hit me, you know we all take for granted the stuff we have in life, when you stop at a place in mexico and ask how much the tacos are and a little old lady feels bad for charging you 8 pesos (about .50 cents american) it makes you think how greedy we have become and how simple life can be. We ate a great meal and headed on down the road to the border. The scenery i saw in this stretch of mexico was as beautiful as ive seen in napa valley, long rolling hills, vast fields of grapes, clear blue skies and clean air...definately not the mexico you picture when you think about her.
we made it to the border around sunset and met a very quick moving line. When we got to the check station the guy looked at ofgs pasport and richs passport took a look at me and said move on. LoL this was one of the jokes of the weekend, they were probably shocked to see an asian looking dude a blonde lady and a very young looking indio in the back and just said WTF move on!!
Like all good things it must come to an end. I was sad that my adventure had ended but was happy to have spent it with such a great group of people.
Victor 101: it was my pleasure to meet you and i hope our paths cross again in the near future.
Osito: you are a class act and i hope we see eachother again in the future and fish
victor: your a good dude and i hope we get together for one of these trips again, maybe next time we can have a beer together
joe: What can i say man after reading your reports and meeting you a couple times i know why everybody says that your one of a kind
adir: work on the narcolepsy and i hope your old lady took it easy on you when you got home!!
OFG: the title of legend is probably an understatement for you. You are definately one of the last few good women left on this earth. i have never felt so welcome and happy around anyone in my life. We deinately will have alot more adventures together in the future.
Rich (sansou): What can i say that hasnt been said before my brother. You are definately one the greatest people i have had the pleasure of knowing from this website. I am glad to be able to call you my friend. All the good things that are in your life are well deserved. I hope that i get to have many more adventures in my life with you.
on a more personal note. I had some time to reflect on some things in my life on this trip and realized that no matter what is happening, its good to be able to know that you have friends due to one simple fact...fishing.
till next time...take care my friends.
