I went to Perris this morning with my son and boy was I dissappointed. The lake was down another 5-6 feet from a month ago, the water was filthy puke brown, 56 degrees, maybe at tops 2 feet visibility.
The east side is completely out of the water with no access to the back side of the rocks. My home lake sucks. This lake has been hammered by fisherman, tournaments, and the MWD. Please open DV so the pressure can come off of this place.
Now for the ONLY fun part of this morning. I was throwing a 4-inch trout swimbait with 15# on a Calcutta 200, Fenwick Inshore rod. We were in 10 feet of water at the dam throwing out to 30-40 feet of water. My bait just hit the bottom and on the 2nd crank it gets slammed. I set the hook hard twice, both sets pulled drag off the reel. The rod tip bends really good, bounces, and I look at my dejected son and said "this is a big fish". Line starts ripping off the reel, I had about 8 pounds of drag on (yea I know it's over the popular 1/3 strength but that is how I fish) and the boat starts moving. This fish is TOWING my 175VS. I make good headway and then loose it as the fish runs. I am thinking what the h*** did I hook? It must be a striper, can't be a bass, possibly a big cat. After 10 minutes it works it way up to the surface 40 yards or so off my bow...CARP, it's a damned CARP on a swimbait. Five minutes later it comes aboard. Enjoy the CARP porn.
That's it, Perris has gone to the CARP. Good luck with your tournament tomorrow.

Awesome fish! Too bad thats not a 23 lb bass!! Did your boy catch anything? Hey was the water color bad all over the entire lake? Maybe an early algae bloom?

Son got skunked. Set on one and broke off. He outfishes me since he was 16, that was 18 years ago, especially saltwater. Water color is off through out the lake. The recent drawdown is carrying silt into the lake. Even the points by the ramp are bare dirt now.

Dang, that is a big fish. Bassguy and I were talking about how you might be on the water today. Sorry we missed you out there. My big pond is turning into a little dirt pond. LOL.

Carp on a swimbait! Wow. I've never caught them on anything except corn, bread, powerbait, and nightcrawlers.

23lb fish is impressive even if it is a fish, congratulations. I say you should start your own guide service and call it "CarpOnly.":)

Sorry to hear the lake is in such crummy shape. I haven't fished out there in a while and it used to be great. Hope it comes back at some point.

Hey Rambo. My dad and I were in the rental boat and heard you talking about this to a couple float tubers in Rock Climbers cove but we missed the part that you caught it on a swimbait. The lake is so low they're looking for anything to eat; but wow, a swimbait of all things. After you left the area we saw a nice 6-7 lb LMB caught on a swimbait. I guess it's like leaving a slot machine you've dumped all your money in only to hear that when you left it paid the jackpot. Let's hope we can get all these ponds filled up soon.

Might not be a bass, but a big fish is still a big fish!

Nice one!

lol.... heres my 23# carp on my 23rd birthday caught at the castaic lagoon.

yours looks bigger!!!

perris is my home lake also, been fishing it since i was in diapers. it really is disapointing seeing the amount of pressure put on her since the closure of dvl launch ramps. the water level is also depressing. i hope the fish continue to thrive!!!

word on the street is perris ramp will be out of the water SOON

Not looking good I was there yesterday and looks like there trying to do something on the back ramp, I could only see about 6" in the east end and maybe 1.5" on the dam

good its getting hammered from the normal dvl anglers that otherwise probably wouldnt give perris a chance. FILL UP OUR LAKES!!!

Junk fish or not, still a very cool catch given the size. Thanks for the report and pics. Better luck next time on the bass!
