I tie a tall dropper loop rig on a 9 foot crappie rod with 4 pound test, and run three mealworms stacked at 2 feet, 4 feet, and six feet from the bottom, then cast and SLOWLY retrieve ALL the way (I hook quite a few right under my kayak) back to the boat. You can also run small artificials this way. I find the multiple targets get their attention better. Hint: They generally seem to like the top one a lot more than the bottom one, he he he...

I also like to throw little mini-cranks. This method gets a lot of bigger fish, and is by far the funnest, short of casting dry flies.

I like my 2wt ,and 3wt. Fly rods. On my 2 wt. I free line a gulp mini 1" worm with a size 10 true turn hook , 2lb leader ,and a small float inticator. On my 3 wt. I tie a small true turn hook on a drooper loop,2lb to 4lb leader and a mini split shot about 2 ft. Below the hook. I use shad colored power bait worms.every thing at the pudd hits those setups .most of the time out fishing guys ,with live bait.to prevent the purest from over reacting, i do use small black beadhead flys, but the catch ratio is nothing compared to my other methods.

Depends on the situation but generally I like to use Tady 45's on the surface.
