View Full Version : Newport Harbor with Da Boyz - Flyngby & Hesbros. PB & a New Species! Sunday 3/1/09

Wingnut

Got a PM from Steve (Flyngby) saying let's hit up the Newport Harbor on Sunday. No need to twist my arm... I can postpone my Mammoth boarding trip for a couple of weeks for a chance to fish with a couple of knowledgeable harbor Masters.

Met up in the early AM with Steve at his wilderness hideaway... drove up to his driveway, got out of the car and heard the sounds of running streams, Crickets singing, Frogs croaking and a peaceful hooting sound of an Owl. Man, you got it made up here Steve... can I stay in your guest house?

Hitched up the boat, loaded up the gear, hit the road to pick up Eddie (Hesbros) and we were on our way. I was both excited and eager to hit the Newport Harbor for my second time. The weather was going to be spectacular today and we were hoping that the fishing would keep pace. Steve and Eddie are a couple of veteran harbor fishermen and I knew that I was in good hands for the day.

Put the boat in the water and as Steve was coaxing the tempermental lady to fire up, Eddie & I decided to warm up by tossing some Lucky Crafts at the launch ramp. Eddie was telling me that got a nice Hali right here just a couple of weeks ago.

Wingnut drew first blood... the LC gets absolutely hammered. The fish was smart and strong, kept heading for the dock pilings.
A great way to wash off last Sunday's Skunk smell don't you think? With a personal best Spottie! Released to spawn another season.

What fooled the big Spottie... Frankenfish LC.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut4/Picture003-10.jpg

The weather was just about perfect!
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut4/Picture039-3.jpg

So off we go into the harbor... the place is so vast, it's a huge maze of waterways that I would have been completely lost without Steve & Eddie on board. We hit up the first spot and started throwing a variety of artificials. Steve & Eddie were thowing leadhead swimbaits in various colors and I decided to dropshot some Gulp Saltwater 5" Jerkshad.
Here's a first for me... and da boys can attest to it. I nailed three short Flatties on my first three casts. They all must be in the same barrel down there.
One of the three short Butts at this spot.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut4/Picture004-10.jpg

We continued to work the water maze as Steve guided us from one honey hole to another... I punched them all into the portable GPS unit that I had hidden in my pocket.

The risk, tight structure fishing... finesse fishing at its best.

Eddie gets a Spottie.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut4/Picture005-10.jpg

Here's a funny moment. Steve "somehow" accidentally dropped his baitcasting rig overboard. :Secret: We spend some time circling the exact spot and dredging the bottom with various lures and snagging devices... Eddie had the touch and saved the day as he was able to snag the rig right on the cork handle, WELL DONE Eddie... very cool!
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut4/Picture018-7.jpg

We continued to work our way along the channel and I get hooked up. Drag running and felt like a nicer fish. After a couple of minutes, the mystery fish shows itself. I was a little disappointed that it wasn't a big Flat Boy, but oh well... a new species for me. Grey Smoothhound Shark and of course, it tried to bite me.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut4/Picture020-7.jpg

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut4/Picture022-7.jpg

Lots of species to catch in the harbor. I caught this YFC for Cangler.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut4/Picture014-7.jpg

More Spottie action.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut4/Picture010-8.jpg

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut4/Picture009-7.jpg

Hook up... the familar headshaking only means one thing... it's Hali time.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut4/Picture023-6.jpg

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut4/Picture025-6.jpg

And another... we didn't really measure or weight any fish today. Wasn't planning to keep anything.
I think a couple of the Flatties might have been close to being legal.

I love fishing here, a beautiful place. Really inspires a person to set lofty goals for themselves... maybe someday.

Back in action! Nothing like enjoying the beautiful scenery, being in good company and catching quality Butts at the same time.

What a fabulous day on the water. In life, sometimes we are judged by the company that we keep, and I certainly was in great company on Sunday.

Steve (Flyngby): Thank you very much for inviting me to fish with you again on your home turf. You have that place dialed in and were the perfect personal guide. Don't think that I didn't notice and appreciate that all day long... you were maneuvering the boat so Eddie & I would get the best position to make the first cast on a spot and always having the best angle on the drift. You are a good friend and a class act. :Big Grin:

Eddie (Hesbros): It was a pleasure meeting and fishing with you for the first time. I had a great time bantering with you all day. You have a great attitude towards fishing and life in general and I'm looking forward to fishing and learning how to hoop with you sometime soon. Thank you and your wife Becky for the special treats. It takes special kind of people to go out of their way to treat a near stranger like a friend. It was a very nice gesture and I wanted the two of you to know that I appreciate it very much.

Wingnut's fish count - All released.
(7) Halibut
(5) Spotted Bass (PB)
(1) Yellow Fin Croaker
(1) Grey Smoothhound Shark (New species).

Thanks for letting me share my fun day everybody... and I hope your weekend was as good or better than mine.

A perfect day to spend on the water.

BTW - Thanks for the great camera work!

Parting shot:
This Hali that I caught was dragging another hook, line and swivel. Today was your lucky day my flat friend... on special, "free piercings removal".
Note: See how my line was rubbing against the sharp teeth of the halibut? The benefit of using a quality fluorocarbon line while dropshotting... anything less is a lost fish.

Wow nice job out there man. It sure did look like a beautiful day to be on the water. And it's always funny to find a fish with someone else's gear in its mouth. I once caught a mackeral with two hooks already in its mouth.
Once again nice job as always.

i can see a future LMB fisherman growing inside you wingnut. pinpoint casting to structure has got to beat even the best troll session. that first spottie must have given you a little ride, he's chunky. that bay is such an awesome multi species fish smorgasboard. i don't think all those homes were paid for by higher education, but i hate to think that some people will inherit more money than i'll ever make. looks like an awesome day, maybe my favorite wingnut outing to date.

Another excellent report, and, IMO, the timing couldn't have been more perfect considering that you broke your rod and got a skunk the last two times. It looks like Poseidon is smiling on you again

Those houses with the yachts are an inspiration. I'll be happy if I get a fraction of that wealth in my life. That's a pretty good quote too, and it has relevance to more in life than fishing. Not sure who said this but, "The harder I work, the luckier I get" is another good one.

Great job out there!!! I almost decided to go out there, but my friends wanted to go fish the local pond since we heard they stocked it with trout. Lets just say we caught about 20 trout limits for us 4. Anyways where did you get the long sleeve 57 shirt??? That thing looks badass I asked Dana once if he was ever gonna make a long sleeve, I'm guessing you have the prototype. Great report from you as always, I think I am going hali hunting tomorrow

First off, as far as the "treat" goes, though I just met you in person in the early hours Sunday morning, I feel as if I have known you forever after reading all your post's and Steves stories. And I owed you for all the "Stuff" I barrowed.

I had a great time fishing with you, can't beat great company! I only caught one fish all day, but this was one of my best trips! (even if i was just "Net *****" and "Picture boy") You are certainly are a pro at the drop shotting and I appreciate all the tips.

Would love to take you out hoopin' and fish the open water for big flatties!

Take care bro!

Oh Yeah, thanks for the trip Steve! J/K......Arthur is right, when Steve takes someone out, he spends his day making sure the guests are in the best spots and on the fish.

Don't think that I am not noticing what you are doing behind my back! The knowledge and tricks will be used in the future!

I did notice something in the pics of both of our boat trips, You seem to like to fish from the swim step. Next time we can actually deploy the step and you can fish from it to get your feet wet and keep you in that comfort zone!:Rolls Eyes:

You did make a great model for the Team 57 Shirts but I think some of the passing by EYE CANDY :EyePop:would sell more. Maybe we could integrate that thought into our next trip!!:Big Smile:

Yes, it was a very nice day.
Everytime I catch a fish with someone's broken line in it's mouth, I can't help but to think of the heartbroken fisherman that lost the prize. Sometimes, I prefer to think that the fish got away from a possible poacher.

Dude - that spot is my little heaven ... there's nuttin like launchin my float or my little 12' aluminum over off 15th and spendin' the day MURDERING flatties and spotties ...

GREAT day guys!!!!!!
There are so many spots like it in that harbor. I think that you can fish there every day for a month and still not be able to thoroughly fish the entire harbor. It's an amazing place... a different kind of fishing.

Great report like always and such great weather. Should've gone out and fished the harbor instead of studying for exams all day now its all winter weather again.
Study first, play later... in that order. The fish will still be there waiting for you.

i can see a future LMB fisherman growing inside you wingnut. pinpoint casting to structure has got to beat even the best troll session. that first spottie must have given you a little ride, he's chunky. that bay is such an awesome multi species fish smorgasboard. i don't think all those homes were paid for by higher education, but i hate to think that some people will inherit more money than i'll ever make. looks like an awesome day, maybe my favorite wingnut outing to date.
Different strokes for different folks... finesse or trolling, whatever works for the situation will get the nod for the day.
Dancing with the Spottie was really fun, pound for pound a better fighter than any Flattie.
As for the high dollar homes and big yatchs, some people are lucky enough to have wealth handed to them and some have to work really hard for it. As long as they appreciate what they have and don't take it for granted... they deserve their fortune.

Awesome report Winger, FB, and HB. What a gorgeous day out there. Looks like the fishing was pretty consistent as well. Quality Spotties and Flatties.
Thanks Bing, definitely one of my better outings... Steve & Eddie really knows their craft.

It was a decent comeback from my last couple of rough surf outings... I needed that to reboost my confidence level.
Witnessing all that wealth may not inspire some people... but I admit, it does motivates me a little bit.
I believe the quote "The harder you work, the luckier you get..." is coined by Gary Player, the famous golfer.

Thanks Seng, good luck on the Butt hunt. Shoot me a PM and let me know where you're heading in the surf and I'll try to steer you in the right direction.

Can't keep a good man down. Nice job getting back in the saddle brother. Talk to you soon, maybe at the Fred Hall show. I need to pick myself up one of those cool new team 57 hoodie that you're wearing.
Hope you can come to the show brother, I plan to be there helping Dana out at the Team 57 booth on Saturday & Sunday. If you can't make it, I'll grab a hoodie for ya, they're gonna go fast!

awesome report and pictures art! great job out there with your buddies!

keepin it dirty,
dirty girl
Thanks DG... just trying to keep up with you and Garrett.

Arturo!

You weren't joking when you told that first spotty was a "quality" fish.....very nice my fishy friend!!

Kudos all around to you, Hesbros and Flyngby for putting together a nice relaxing fishing trip! You guys do it in style!
Thanks Rich, you still owe me a guided surf trip in the SD area one of these days... and I'm gonna collect real soon buddy.

That sounds like a kickass day Trout fishing! I was wearing the prototype and the units are in full production and will be available for the first time at the Fred Hall show. They are awesome and gonna sell fast! Hope you did well on your Halibut hunt.

MAN WHAT A GREAT DAY OF FISHING,,,,,,AWSOME REPORT AND PICS ART,,,t/o
Thanks Bob, it was nice chatting with you today on the phone. I know that things have been tough lately but I know you will get through it just fine. My thoughts and prayers are with you & Susan and if you need anything, just pick up the phone. When things do get back to normal, and I know that they will... we will go back out there and give those Stripers hell.

Arthur, why did you not post the pick ofthe Saltwater Pumpkinseed fish i got?????? LMAO!!!

Late!
Saltwater Pumpkinseed...
Thanks again for the "treats" Eddie, I'm planning to enjoy them this weekend. No such things as borrowed stuff, friends don't keep score. On board, my stuff is your stuff... except for the fish! :Envious:
Looking forward to heading out with you and Steve again soon. Next time, I'll be YOUR cameraman.
As for the dropshotting thing, I was lucky enough to learn from some of the best sticks in the surf. Which includes Mike (Kichigai1), Mike (Bones) and Sinjin Kim.

WOW! you guys rocked it out there!
Days like this makes fishing fun.
Go out and buy a boat Wingnut... Lets troll the coast!
BW
Had a boat, remember Phuong? Cost me more to fix it up than the card hand that I won it with. Maybe someday, when I can justify taking it out more than once a month. Look at your boat... it hasn't touched water in a year! We do need to head out soon before you forget how to cast!

Candyman,

Ill have the NEW long sleeved TEAM 57 t-shirts at the Fred Hall show.....
sorry for the threadjack Arthur! Now back to your regualry scheduled WINGNUT fishing report! :Embarrassed:

I tried to get some of the pretty harbor mermaids to model the shirts but they said that it smelled like fish. Sorry that you had to settle with me Dana.

Looks like you all had a blast thanks for the pics and report Arthur very nice job on the Butts.

Bigred
You should have dragged your little boat down there Lucas. You would have had a blast in that harbor.

Arthur, to continue the bantering.......blah blah blah blah.........Arthur: Oh here we go (As he gets a bite) Eddie: Hope you miss it! LOL
Oh McEddie had a farm... eee iii eee iii ohhh!
It was so much fun going back & forth with ya all day.
I've never seen anybody farm so many fish before in my life!!!
What you didn't know was that when you weren't paying attention, I switched out your spool and replaced them with 2lb test line. It was fun to see you break off at hookset time after time. Steve and I was wondering when you were going to finally figure it out.
Seriously though, you got balls "o" steel for fishing #6 my friend... the sharp teeth of those Halis & Spotties cut through them like nothing.
Thanks again for netting my fish and taking such wonderful pics. :Big Smile:

Beautiful report once again !
Thank you once again...

What a great day out there. From begining to end i really enjoyed the pics and report. Hope 2 cya out there sometime. Love that place. Props
Thanks Rob, hope you had a nice birthday... maybe I'll see ya out there on the water one of these days.

Arthur,
Great report as always. Good time fishing with friends....Nice!

KPN.
Thanks Khanh, sounds like you had a great time with your group of friends as well on Sunday. :Big Grin:

OMG, that's one sick harbor report. Beautiful day, good friends and nice fishes. Can't beat a day like that bro. I spent the day at SARL and managed one Trout, beats the skunk I guess. See you soon.
No Skunk for you! But I heard that you caught a Lightning Trout! Now I haven't caught one of those! Nicely done bro, talk to you soon.

Great report.

Nice job dude! Hey, that first hali was caught in MY spot.
Yes we poached YOUR spot Kevin. Thanks for posting the pics of the spot on your report... oh wait, there were no pics in your report.
Just kidding kid, I'm glad that you had a good day there too.

Great looking spottie!
I can't wait to get back to the bay-sics!
I see you replaced the Carrot Stix.
Thanks Big "E". Hope you had a fabulous birthday my friend.
I have six Carrot Stix rods... but the replacement is on the way.

Arthur,

Always a pleasure to get out with you and I see many more adventures ahead for us and our respective friends.

Don't think that I am not noticing what you are doing behind my back! The knowledge and tricks will be used in the future!

I did notice something in the pics of both of our boat trips, You seem to like to fish from the swim step. Next time we can actually deploy the step and you can fish from it to get your feet wet and keep you in that comfort zone!

You did make a great model for the Team 57 Shirts but I think some of the passing by EYE CANDY would sell more. Maybe we could integrate that thought into our next trip!!

Roxy!! has been on edge the past 2 nights and keeps running to the door wondering if you were coming back for another dance!!!!
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z286/flyngby/CIMG3016.jpg

Till next time buddy!!!!

Steve
Thanks again for the funfilled day Steve. It was one of the most enjoyable days I've ever had on the water.
Now what tricks did I try to conceal from you...? There were so many.
You are right, I was tempted a few times to take off my shoes and dangle my feet in the water to get into my comfort zone.
Next time, we'll get your Hobo Mermaid to model for us!
Roxy was quite a dancer... and snuck in a kiss on the cheek when I wasn't expecting. Boy, was Wingnut Pug jealous!

WN,
Another alias, HarborNut?
Looks like you guys had a killer day out in the Harbor. Loved that 1st spottie of the day. You guys had some great catches. Glad Hesbros snagged the Captains bait rig, sweet hookup. The new long sleeve 57-T is tight, can't wait to get one. Thanks for the great outing report and xlnt pixs.

NG
Thanks NG, we had a really nice day in the harbor. If you can't make it out to the Fred Hall Show to get the new 57-T, I'm sure that Dana will have them available on-line sometime afterwards. Hope to see a fishing report from ya soon!

A fun day out on the water and another great report, thanks for sharing Arthur.

TD
Thanks Aaron, you should talk Binger into taking the Green Machine to the harbor. You guys would have a blast fishing that place.
See ya at the show, I'll put in a good word with Erica for ya.

What does the 57 stand for with regards to team 57?
Dana (Fisherman 57) used to race cars and his number was 57. There's a story to tell... and Dana shares it with us from time to time.

Sick day in NPH ... nice pics. Thanks for the report.

yeah ya dang Surf Nazi's, you are taking up my space on the boat! lol. Leave my native harbor fish alone! Steve needs to be fishing for Calico's! Will be tough working the docks from shore Sunday A.M. with that high of a tide, wont be much beach/sand to move around on from 15th st. south as far as the private docks go.
