Santa Barbara rockfish opener 3.01

setup this trip well in advance with my buddies Kemper, Michael, Clay, and last minute replacement Saro. we fished the wavewalker with capt david bacon and deckhand ramona lisa out of santa barbara harbor. The live bait barge is closed right now in SB harbor, but didn't matter. the squid and mackerel killed it today. we fished pretty shallow all day, and i even rocked the dropper loop on my bass set-up (revo inshore and Berkeley IM7 rod). super fun, and i think i made up my mind to only fish braid for rockfish from now on. i'm backing the braid.

I think kemper pulled up this sheephead first drop. they were thick today.

the wind picked up around 9am, and so did the bite. Saro with a nice taco.

we moved around between spots and ended at the 4 mile. Fished here the rest of the day. clay with a nice tree fish and an actual smile from the dark lord.

today's tally was 83 caught, 35 kept for 5 people.

as always it was a great plesure to fish aboard the wavewalker. well worth the 1.5 hour drive there and back.

What a fantastic way to start the bottom fishing season....nice quality fillets for the freezer. I love making a fish chowder with the bottom fish...that, some fresh sourdough and a cold one, "fahgetta bout it!"

Take a good look out those choppers in the first picture, isn't it obvious? If not please post a pic of your propper lipping technique on a fish like this. :LOL:

funny story about that. i've tried to buy my year license about 4 times at different stores all over LA. big 5, sport chalet, my local korean shop, and the piru marina. DFG is making a mint off me this year with day licenses. almost seems criminal.
