Nice report. When are you going to give in to the darkside (squid)?

Hi cappo,

Regrettfully (from a numbers caught standpoint) .... I have said my last goodbys to live and frozen/dead-bait fishing. All those little Squidys are all other anglers on the boats candy bait !! On the other hand, I won't ever have to feel like I have to be chippin' in to help buy a couple of scoops of Squid !!

Forgot to mention in the report .... there is this one guy ..... one guy that was found to be cutting up LIVE Squid !! All this fresh dead around and this guy gets the idea to kill the live candy !! Deck saw it, Skipper saw it ..... like double-take time ... I think they were speechless for a second and then they persuaded the angler to cut it out .... so to speak !!

Ya gotta love the moo-moos,

JapanRon

Hi JapanRon,

Way to go on getting out. The Victory sounds like a good boat. I may have to try it one Wednesday when you're on it during the summer. As for SMB, it sounds like they will be doing the rockfishing thing in the morning on their trips, and will be heading for the stones in the afternoon.

As for catching a trigger... you might have to go to the dark side to catch one of those. Otherwise, you just have to try extra hard to catch one. Good luck!

Thanks for the report JR.

I'm gonna be fishing this sunday on a 3/4 boat out of I don't even know yet for rockfish. How much lead do you recommend?

Also, do you fish big hammers?

Hi Jackpot Jimmy,

Thanks for the heads-up on the coming SMB boats' strategy.

I've caught a lot of fish that shouldn't have been caught on rubber. I catch a lot of Treefish which it seems to me would feed about the same as the Trigger.

Prospects don't look too good if half the time is used on Rockfish and then less time for a visit to Mr or Ms Trigger's abode !! No matter, I'm gonna hit the Spitfire when the Victory goes off-line for sure whatever the plan.

thanks,

JapanRon

Hi Calico Killer Kevin,

It's kind of interesting in that the depth one might expect to fish is pretty much decided by what a particular skipper thinks is good any given day. Some skippers and thus the boats they run are known to really go deep while others stay moderate or shallow. Of course, conditions 1/2 or 3/4-day, and distances dictate where and how deep the boat fishes too. There are some skippers and boats that fish really deep and I'll not go on that boat the day a given skipper is running the vessel just on the chance that the guys rep will be proven.

If I was fishing dead-bait on dropper-loops in moderate current, I'd use 4ozs for depths to 120, 6ozs for 200 plus, and 8ozs for 300 plus. Rent-a-rods are often rigged with 8oz torpedos but they are usually waaaaaay overgunned for close-in, inshore 1/2-day Rockfishing. If ....... you use live bait, you may need to add just a little more weight for a given depth. All that said, the paramount consideration is that those around you fish similar weights and methods to reduce tangles. No matter how correct you might be .. if there are 3 nubes on both sides of you doing something else and won't listen ... you have only two options ..... and you know what they are !!

I welcome others to put in their two cents in too as many readers are presently fishing the dropper-loop/torpedo rigs !!

Thanks for asking,

JapanRon

Hi again Calico Killer Kevin,

Forgot to answer your second question.

Yes, I use Big Hammers. I love BH's !! I like all the different makers stuff as long as they are of decent quality. Choosing between the BH's, FT's, AA's, MC's, Whams/Blams, Kalins, etc. is more a matter of size and color availability than exclusive use of one makers stuff.

I've got some shabby stuff (split-outs) recently but ............. I understand that there are all sorts of variables on a specific 'run' of a particular color and model. Pouring is not a mass-production thing totally for our local makers I suspect so quality varies. Solid colors or single-pour baits are usually just fine but when three seperate colors/pours are done ... that's when problems can occur.

Hi fishfinder333,

As mentioned, the Victory will do it's last trip of the Winter season tomorrow (Sunday) March 1st !! Mike will be running the boat and will do his usual consumate job on getting anglers to a spot where THEY can put fish in the bag. The boat will be off-line for a fairly short period of time 2 or 2 and a half weeks.

Past experience says he'll (sorry Mike if I'm second-guessing you incorrectly) go first for the Boccacio (2 fish@trip this year) to kinda weigh-down the sacks till ...... maybe a shot at the reds ..... then the Sculpin .... then the Sheephead and or Whitefish !! Whatever the order ... conditions will dictate what's targeted !!

Good luck if you go. Say hello to my buddy Art (tall skinny guy) that often fishes Red #7 or 8 and loves Perch.

good luck,

JapanRon
