Went in the back bay today, caught a few typical spotties then caught a weird fish that I have never seen before. Unfortunately my son took the picture on his phone then dropped the phone in the water while getting the boat out of the water.
It was deep green and looked kind of like a Sculpin. It had a sh#$ load of teeth with several rows in its mouth. There were 2 front teeth about 1/4" long in the front of its mouth. It was 17" long and 3 lbs. I caught it on a plastic jerk bait on the bottom near the coast highway bridge.

Still working on the phone. :x

Midshipman..

Did it have rows of what you might call stitching up and down belly and sides(photophores)??

Otherwise look like a ling cod??

I think Nessie made the right call. My guess would be a midshipman as well. It could be a staghorn sculpin but I think it was a midshipman.

During the cold months Oct-Jan. You can catch a gang load of these down in Shoreline Village (LBC) piers...

My buddy and I used to catch these damn things all the time. very annoying...and they bark or growl or make some kind of noise

They supposedly move into the bays to spawn.. The males sing to attract females.. Residents hate them...

I doubt you caught a Ling in the bay.. Not very likely... I guess anything is possible though...

I agree with Frank. Not saying it can't be but I also doubt that it's a ling. It'll be a first that I've heard of.

sounds like it could be a cabezon if u said it resembles a sculpin...they have the same effect as one if u get pricked by the spines on the fins

Midshipmen are delicious. They may look ugly, but they taste so GOOD!

If you are going to fish saltwater, you need to get a net or Lip Gripper to handle the toothy fish..

Those pliers are damaging/breaking the jaws..... What to you do with a short Hali?????

most likely a cabezon, i've caught many midshipman and never saw one go over a pound. Luckily he didn't catch a wolf eel and try to see what kind of teeth that has
