Can winter bass fishing get any better????

Caught the 1/2 day boat, Reel Fun out of Dana Point today skippered Captain Eric. We left at 6:30 AM with some live and fresh dead squid and picked up some deans at the bait barge.

I don’t’ think many sanides were caught with deans at all, but it didn’t matter if you used live or dead squid the bass were all over it. Many if not all the folks got their limit, and who ever didn’t got some hand me downs from those who did.

I probably farmed 5 fish or more, most likely cause I was using 1/0 hooks. I changed over to 3/0 circles and it seemed to solve my problem. Most people were catching them using a Carolina rig with a 1 oz egg sinker or just a bead and egg sinker tied directly to their lines.

The $45 jack pot was taken by a very good young fisherman with a decent sized winter bass.

Highlight of the day was when some guy from Michigan caught a juvenile black sea bass. It looked liked it weighed 15 – 20 lbs. Hook removed and pic taken in less than 2 minutes as it shot back down to the reef 65’ below.

I’ve fished many times out of Dana Point past couple of seasons, but this was the first time that we used squid for bass fishing when I was aboard. It’s just amazing what a difference it makes. I hope this is just the beginning of an excellent bass season!

Hi NY4Reels,

Nice job on all those good fish !! I'm surprised that no one was using the ol' white banana 1/4~1/2oz (live) to 1oz (mostly freshdead) leadhead and Squid. Guess you musta been fishing mostly the sand or mud !! I guess the Sand Bass should taste pretty good still.

Await your next trip's report,

JapanRon
