View Full Version : Question about fishing non-planted waters

Or no longer planted waters, I think, is more accurate. Anyhow, here's the dilemma. My buddy wants to go fish the Kern this spring, and we usually fish stockers/holdovers for keeps (within limits, of course). I said I thought we should not fish it if we're planning on keeping them because without stockings I think the place will be overfished and ruined & I want no part of that. Sort of a self imposed "C & R" policy for those waters that were formerly stocked. My friend says that the natural/remaining population is strong enough to sustain fishing for the foreseeable future but I don't agree.

So what is the general feeling about this? If people continue to take limits from the Kern will it be ruined?
Or am I wrong and it's just fine to do this without much impact?

I think I'm absolutely right and am hoping others will do the same with our long term interests in mind.

It is very simple.

NO NEW FISH + PEOPLE TAKING FISH = AN EMPTY RIVER.

How long it will take to be empty all depends on fishing pressure.

Well if you are adamant about not fishing there or strict C&R and he disagrees, then tell him you hope he has a good time when he goes, and leave it at that.
