What are your recommendations for a bait casting reel under 100 bucks that can hold a good amount of 14 lb line for lure fishing for stripers? It needs to have a good cast control mechanism since I'm new to these types of reels. Thanks

Shimano Corvalus 300 or 400 $80 range...

Shimano Quality and spool capacity your looking for...
The spool totally disengaging is a plus for lighter applications also..

You shouldn have any baitcasting problems with 1 oz & up baits....

hmm checking out the reviews on it and there's a lot of bad ones, although there are good ones too. lots of people have problems with the drag breaking. someone said it's a small plastic piece that breaks easily.

The Daiwa Megaforce is a good option. You might be alittle light on line though. Spend a bit more money. For about $115 the Citica 200E is very hard to beat. I think it would be a bit more comfortable to fish with 12 on this reel, but 14 is doable.

Go with a Cardiff 300 (or 200) for a round reel or spend more money and get a slightly used Curado 300 or 200 on ebay. If you can't afford a Curado, get a Citica for low profiles.

Go with a Cardiff 300. DO NOT BUY THE CORVALUS! I am fan of Shimano
reels, but the corvalus just outright sucks. I would much rather have a
Citica at this price range, but it is about $10-$15 more, but it's a great all
around reel. Put some 30/8 braid on it and you will never have to worry
about line issues.

I have found only one weak spot so far in mine....
The drags are fine & a fiber composite..

But the level wind drive gear is Nylon, below the Main gear on Rght side..
If anything hangs up in the level wind while you crankin, this Nylon gear has a tendency to strip and the level wind jumps or wont work....
I have repaired mine, and have an extra Nylon gear (come 2 in a pack from Shimano)... Easy fix....

Other wise I have found it it be an excellent reel with great casting and power.... And Im a Daiwa guy.... :Embarrassed: :Embarrassed:

If you want excellence Get the Daiwa Luna 300.. You will never regret it..

Take a look at the Shimano Citica. Sweet reel w/o dishing out an arm and a leg. Stay away from the Corvalus. Price might tempt you, but buyer beware. I had a Corvalus 200 for fishing the turds and the reel didn't even last one night of fishing. The frame of the reel gave out. No matter how many times I tightened the screws on the frame, the frame came loose. Take a look at the Citica. Good luck.

Personally I rather pick up a used reel for $100-150.
I'd look for a used shimano curado D 300, Shimano Calcutta, Daiwa Lun 253, 300

There are some deals if your willing to wait.

i remember seeing a deal for a luna 253 and a rod for $150 on this board. That is a deal.

got two LMB but unfortunately they weren't on my new reel so i didn't get it test it. it casts very well though. nice and light, like the low profile, very smooth. thanks again for all the recommendations!
