I was convinced by Mr. Bendo to try pier fishing. We rolled down to Huntington Pier and got our lines in the water. We threw some C-rigs out with some squid and chovies in an attempt to entice some Halibut or Bat Rays. Then we worked some Sabiki Rigs to try to get some live bait ending up with some smelt, herring, and a few anchovies. I was owning the smelt. As far as decent sized fish were concerned it started off pretty slow. Bendo pointed out that it was low tide and this was the likely cause for the slowness. I passed the time by taking some pics of some dolphins and some scenery.

After some tide rolled in later in the day ... the ownage commenced ...

I caught a halibut ... PB since it was my first one ... not a keeper ...

Then Mr. Bendo detected bendo and ended up with this 'butt ...

and another 'butt ...

We then proceded to wreak havoc on the local bat ray population ...

** Props to Mr. Bendos buddy Tyler (I think that was his name) who busted an assist on that last one that took me for a ride **

I also ended up with this skate

The highlight of the day was Mr. Bendo's PB Halibut (28")

And his PB Bat Ray (Or Mud Marlins as he calls them)

I think I can safely say I dig Pier Fishing ...

Hey Dana ... Hope you had an awesome B-day party ... we didn't make it cuz we could barely move after we were done with all those fish ...

Anyway ... hope to see all you salties out on the pier ...

no kidding. that is the reason why i abandoned pier fishing long ago.

All walks of life, different ages, different race, sexes and anything in between are all asking...

"catching any?"; "are you gonna eat that?"; "what are you going to catch?"; "this is a dirty water, ur not keeping the fish are you?"; "hey son look at this guy trying to cach something"

I would not mind pier fishing if it wasn't for so many people. So, I guess I'll have to stick with other locations...

OKAY.....that is some great pics Dre!! When u told me u caught all that stuff earlier that day it sounded cool....but the pics totally bring it to life. I really regret not going with when I got the invite....HAHA! BUT I would've missed Dana's great b-day party at Stubricks so whatever...haha. I can't believe the crowd u guys got to catch all that stuff. And I know exactly where u were fishing at....for once in my life I think I wouldn't have gotten lost going there...HAHAHA.

Aight....well nice one!

Thanks for all the replies. We were using 30lb test line. All of the larger fish were hoisted up using that net you see in some of the pics. I really don't think there is a gentle way to release fish off the pier. We saw all of them swim away back into the depths (hopefully that was a good sign). I think I answered all the questions I saw. I have to say that I agree that all the "question askers" got a little annoying ... but you could also have fun with it with responses like "yeah ... we usually chew on the raw bat ray wings on the way home ..."

that is a great attitude "DreStyle". I used to answer all the questions and courteous to all watchers and questions. This was about 5 years ago. You are a much better person than I am in that you probably are more patient with people.

It looks like you guys had BLAST!!! Awesome.....

Great job on the Casper's and Legal Butt.

Keep it up!!!!!!!!!!

As for releasing them with-out the 40 foot belly flop which would hurt like "HELL" :thumb: You could use the same net to lower them to a soft landing and after the Hoop Net reaches the water let it drop quick to release it. That's what I did when using the net for the "Crabs" at the Balboa Pier!!!!!!!!!
