Thought I would take the Penny Dog fishing in between the snow storms. We were there at 9:00 a.m.(Sun Feb 15th). Penny had her new sweater on. Quite the lady.
Air temp started at about 35 but got warmer as the day went on. Threw Traps and Swim Baits. Not even a bump. We walked two miles. Departed by noon.

The first S word goes to the big SKUNK.
:Skunk:

On our hike back we spotted a Skull right next to the water.

The second word goes to the big SKULL.

Let’s play the game “Guess the creature”…

Third word goes to the big STICK.

Penny always loves to play stick after a fun morning of fishing.

Too bad about the skunk. Fishing and hanging out with your dog sure beats working though, eh? As for the skull, I would say it's a coyote missing the canines, but the front teeth are a bit too wide. Plus the eyes are set to the sides of the skull, indicating a herbivore (predators' eyes both face the front for better depth percveption. Herbivores' eyes face out to the sides, for a larger frame of reference to defend against predators). I'd say it's probably a female deer or maybe a feral sheep.

I looked at the Skull against my mammals of California book. I think you're right skyler. Even though the Mule Deer Skull they show in the book is a male, it is the same except the antlers. Good call!

Love the dog and her stick...looks like she picked one big enough to start building a survival shelter in case you get lost, LOL. As for the skull, too bad there's not something next to it to show the size. I'm not sure its a deer though because they don't have teeth in the front on the top, only on the bottom (jaw). Unless the front is completely broken off, which I can't tell for sure by the picture. (see deer skull below).

Teeth aren't sharp enough for a coyote (see coyote skull picture).

However, after looking at things though, and some other likely candidates that aren't even close, I'm leaning towards a deer also. Must have a lot of the front of the skull missing.

 I called Art and ragged on him about not getting out there. I told him to at least go on the forums. Going on the forum would give him the fever.

That Crazy dog is always pulling sticks and bushes out of the ground. Here are a couple more pictures of the skull. The front of the upper jaw was missing. The skull was big enough to be a deer.

You'll get em next time!

Oh and I love your dog! I wish I could take my dogs fishing but they are afraid of water and since they are terriers I don't like taking them off the leash because they are sometimes stubborn, Haha.

Overall looked like a fun outing!

After seeing the chewing surface of the teeth, I'm quite positive it's a muley doe skull. I find them pretty often while hunting in the mohave, especially near water sources.

Darn it. I thought the letter S in the title was going to be for striper. There was major skunkage on Sunday all day long over there. I was out for a little bit in the early afternoon and nothing. That area of the duct was worked hard from morning to night by numerous people and skunk city for everyone.

Thanks for all the kind words. I will pass them along to Penny. Her head is going to swell up though. If you see us out there stop by and say hello. We usually fish the aqueduct together, but she comes with me to Elizabeth Lake too when I am not tubing it. It's harder with her in the Winter. She has so much energy. If I don't take her outside, she will "race track" inside the house to spend that energy.
We'll see you out there,
Scott
