SOCAL SURF REPORT
WESTERN OUTDOOR NEWSPublished: Jan 21, 2009

SAN DIEGO — The biggest surf fishing news of the year thus far is that of Brett Magee of Oceanside landing a 17-pound, 5-ounce striped bass from Oceanside’s Buccaneer Beach. It ate a plastic swimbait, according to Hugh Cobb at Pacific Coast Bait and Tackle in Oceanside. Corbina are showing up around the Oceanside Pier, but, as usual, getting them to bite has been tough. The few anglers coaxing them into biting are using bloodworms. Barred surfperch are showing up throughout the county at usually productive beaches like Carlsbad State Beach, Torrey Pines, Pacific Beach and Imperial Beach.

Yup, Striper is one of the sport fisheries in San Francisco Bay/Delta. They get big up there!

Stripers in SoCal now that's interesting. I hope that in the coming years I'll be able to pull up a jailbird on a Party boat. Cool report man thanks for sharing.

Last year we had two or three reports of stripers being caught in the surf. Wingnut has caught some a bit further north too.

Sounds cool if they open a pen up .. But i just hope they feed them popcorn or top ramen i don't want to see the local live bait boats raise there prices on a scoop of live bait cause there buying all the bait to feed those monsters. I know they feed them dead bait but where do they get the bait from.

Thank you all for the comments. In the back years ago, some of the fishermen caught striper bass in SoCal. That is what I have heard from them in other web site.

That's where the duct fish are coming from. They come down from northern California. The ones that don't get chewed up by the pumps get caught in the duct, or they make it into the Aqueduct lakes like Pyramid, Castaic, Silverwood, Skinner...

For the record... I haven't caught a Striper out of the surf, yet.
Still chasing the Lineside phantom in the salty suds, but someday, I plan to catch lightning in a bottle.
