For a all around basic setup I would say a calstar/seeker 670 rod with a reel capable of 300yds of 30lb test. Reels - *Avet mxl/jx/lx - *Daiwa sealine or saltist 40/50. This would cover bottom fishing to tuna.

i think for the rods you should go for calstar 700m or a Gloomis 20-40,30-50
and the reel trinidad or toriun size 16 or 20 pack with spectra and short top shot

700m is to stiff for local 700L is perfect

Surf perch to Tuna and Bill Fish??? Way to much to make a suggestion...

Salt water covers a lot of areas....

Not to mention you can spend between $200 and $2,000 for ONE new rig...

Need more info.....

sounds like overkill if the guy wants to fish spotties and perch but he's not giving us much to work with is he?

Considering he's asking in the Harbor, Bay,surf and peir section, he's going to be looking for something rather light. But really he needs to give us more information. Target species, locations and techniques.

We really shoul make a sticky for this kind of stuff. Newer people assume we can read their minds. ;) Must be a new feature of the internet I wasn't aware of.

Are you looking for a baitcaster or spinning reel? Bait and wait or plastics/lures? Shore based or in a boat?

What has been your experience in the salt so far and what would you like to try. Meening.... As you browse through the SW boards....What catches your attention. What kind of reports do you see and say "That looks like a blast....I want to try it".The SW has soooooooo much to offer and you don't need to go broke to really enjoy it. For example....
When I got back into SW 3 1/2 years ago I just took a couple of my old LM Bass FW setups and started immediately catching surf perch, corbina and eventually halibut in the surf enviroment and it didn't cost me anything except a change of baits and tactics.SW is VERY harsh on gear. If you do go cheap.....Expect to replace your gear more often (reels...not so much rods). Guys fishing from boats, float tubes and kayaks don't have to worry about sand nearly as much as surf fisherman which is also a factor to think about. One thing for sure is that your general question will invite a whole host of opinions. It's kinda like saying "I just got my drivers license.....What kind of car should I buy?"
I live with a guy who has had alot of boats. He has fished everything from local surf perch to Tuna,Dorado and Marlin in Mexico. He has alot of expensive gear and his philosophy is if you buy cheap......you get cheap and the good stuff lasts. Upper end gear will stand the test of time but sometimes your budget gets in the way.Soooooooo...Buy the best gear you can afford within reason. You won't regret it!
Last but not least......Match the gear to the SW enviroment and species that you will be fishing the most. Be practical about it and go catch some fish------<><

The shimano curado 200 is a good mid range baitcaster. It'll hold plenty of line anywhere from 8-15lb test, casts great, nice drag, and has a good braking system. I've had mine for 7 or 8 years and it works as good as the day I got it.

Oh lol nvm, I guess it's not a midrange reel. I just looked it up on cableas and they cost a lot more than I remember it being.
