Hi bradakas,

Dang it ! It's my fault the way I musta screwed up in wroting that sentance !! Your the second person that thought that was my intention ! That red fishy is a Cabezon .. the skipper called it a Chilipepper Cabezon.

My bad ....

Nice report Ron. I was out there on the 4th I must have just missed you guys coming in. I can't wait for March 1 and the variety fishing S.W.R.F. brings. Nice "slimestick"

Hi supasportkid,

Yes, I'm serious. If everyone again clears the stern like the last two times to fish elsewhere, I'm fly-fishin' !!

Nice informative report as always.

I'm digging the "Fishing in Japan" stuff. I'm definately going to bring some tako on my next lingcod trip....what doesn't get used, will gladly be eaten!

Thanks for another informative post, JapanRon

I totally enjoy the detail in your plastics write-up! I usually go back and read it over again just so i don't miss anything important....keep up the awesome work!

Hi chris,

Thank you buddy. Yes, it will be great for my buddys when all the fish but the Lingcod can be kept March 1st. Two Bocaccio is another plus.

My downside: More guys on the boat. More guys on the boat with trout spinning outfits and 8oz torpedos or three pyramid sinkers tied together so they twirl as they sink dragging the two whole Squid that they pinned on their 100lb test ganions.

I'll have camera at the ready to document the reality of it all !!

Hi Mr J,

Oh man ..... here I am fishing my brains out with plastics covering every inch of the water column, being doubted when I say that there are still cuda around by my buddies, (one or two are in the counts every week if one looks carefully). And what happens .... an angler catches MY TARGET on some dumb dropper-loop with of all things CUT-BAIT ... smack-dab on the &#$% bottom !!

There's no justice sometimes !! Yet, it's all good !! Still shoulda been MY fish ! ha ha ha

Hi sansou,

It's always fun to see what guys elsewhere are doing in their fishing. Besides Japan being one of the most fishing~est publics in the world, one of my buddies ... Capt.G puts out some great ...and ...current reports on his fishing in Japan .... firstperson.

Finding different takes on tackle is very interesting to me. Twenty-five ... yes ... 25 years ago I was using circle hooks in Japan .... ringed circle hooks !! Granted ... they had a Japanese style flatened w/hole eyelet (also used for wire leaders too) but the ring solved any problems. So then what .... U.S. anglers discover circle hooks and their advantages !! It's a funny world.

Hi fish_sauce,

You're too kind. Writing some of that stuff out makes me formulate a plan for the next coupla trips. I'm always looking for feedback on what guys tried or altered to make it their own and more productive. Not so always positive results are also welcome.

Let us know what worked, how you made it work, or how and why you feel it was not worth a heck !!

The one drawback I've fought with over the years on the extra heavy weight is that it will kill a percentage of the natural action that was built into a plastic. It's the trade-off that's the thing !! I say .... if the priority is to get down fast and STAY down........ than the trade-off is often worth the hassle !!

Hi Troutnine,

How much you wanna bet .... we'll never have that few on the boat again. Even if we have 3 other guys ...... you can be two will be on the stern corners and one in the bow ! ha ha ha

thanks and awaiting your next report ... last SW one was excellent !!

Hi rusty6,

I believe it was Jackpot Jimmy that was saying it was the 'lord' too ! I guess stubborn old JR is gonna have to give up and call it that but I looked up that fishy and it's eyes were very big and the color pattern so way different. Of course ... juvenile fish ...different marking.... is the norm !!

If I catch another on I'll call it a RIL .. I promise !! Strange the DFG doesn't have this fish in their list !!

good fishing,

JapanRon

Hi BIGRED KILLA,

Thanks. Last year was great for me plastics-wise on the Cuda. Had lots of limits vs lots of bite-offs. If you throw plastics for them ....... Please ..... Please use the loooong-shanked leadheads. They're painted red, hooks are cadnium (oh well) , in both 1/2 and 3/4 oz weights. These leadheads were the secret of my successes in 'landing' so many.

Couple of other guys fishing meat were using long-shanked Shags.
