They are not ugly man! A cool lookin' fish. They are a kind of freshwater sculpin. Bass and large trout eat those guys. The lure (fly) called a "Muddler Minnow" is fashioned after this fish.

Thanks for the info. Do those guys get much bigger? Sculpin I've caught off the pier are good eats... maybe a bigger one of these might be tasty... or slimy poison

They are generally small, 4-5" or less. I caught on once at Pyramid that was HUGE! It ate a plastic worm in 20' on a rockpile reef and it was and honest 12" long!!!

I would say its a freshwater sculpin. I'm not really sure if that's what there called. Up in sacremento they use them for stripper bait on the Sac river. I guess you can call them gobys or sculpins

Lake Skinner has a bunch of those things too inside the rocks on the backside of launch ramp #2. I think they are called gobys. Are they legal to fish with for live bait? Anyone know?

The fish you have pictured are definitely sculpin. As stated above the bass love em (it's a huge percentage of their diet up here in Big Bear) and the trout and catfish eat them as well. According to the most recent electro shock survey the MWD says they shocked up some goby's as well, however I have never seen one in the lake (which doesn't say a whole hell of alot!). I know the shimofuri goby has invaded lots of water in nor cal. and some are known to be in a few bodies of water here in so. cal. but that's all I know. Also it is illegal to use them (sculpin or goby's) for bait (or any other live fish or creature other than worms and crickets). Catching them (sculpin) is the price you will pay when fishing nightcrawlers on the bottom. Scott
