Did some fly fishing for some wild trout today. Got the day off due to rain so i thought why not go fishing. I packed up my rain suit and fly rod and headed off to a local stream for some wild trout. It rained off and on all day but it was not bad. I ended up C&Ring about 15 and missed at least 50. All fish were caught on a 14 or 16 olive caddis. Its crazy how the fish nail dry flies on raining days. Fished for about 10am till around 3. Nice day off.

Most were about this size.

WOW, nice little creek.

Question: Are native trout and wild trout the same thing?

Nice! Gotta love the rainy days! I was soooo surprised to catch fish on dries in the rain. But then again, I'm a greenie to fly fishing, so maybe that's not so unusual. Congrats on the unexpected day off too bro, those are always nice.

No. Wilds are simply born in the stream, not stocked. Natives would have been here before the stocking programs began in the 1840's-50's. There are no native trouts in our local (IE) streams. They're all decendants of previously stocked trouts. Althouth there were historically native rainbows, landlocked steelhead, I think the scientific consensus is that the strain is gone, fished out and replaced by the genetics of stocked trouts. This is a pretty good read on native SoCal freshwater fishes. http://www.sawpa.org/sawpa-old/EIP_Images/draft_final/appendix%20g.pdf

Here's a good definition of 'Native vs. Wild' from the CA DFG website: http://www.dfg.ca.gov/fish/Resources/WildTrout/WT_NativeVsWild.asp
