Citing a wave of Violence & Murder in Mexico, The Commanding Officer of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force based at Camp Pendleton ordered Tijuana off limits for his Marines
The order by Lt. Gen Samuel Helland restricts travel into Mexico by the 44,000 members of the unit. Helland's directive requires written approval from a Lt. Colonel or higher-ranking officer for travel across the border. Marines going into Mexico must complete anti-terrorism traning, recive a Military Security briefing and use the buddy system.
Tijuana saw its bloodiest year ever in 2008 with 843 killings compaired to 337 in 2007.
The State Deparmant has Issued a Travel Alert for all Americans going into Mexico.
Something to think about before you plan your fishing trip down south. If the Marines can't go I sure as heck will not go.
