While in South Texas AKA "The Valley" I managed to talk my cousin Ref and one of his buddy's to call in sick form work after an all night BBQ with many beers involved. We headed the next morning out to a place call the Cuts, basically is a channel carved out for ships to go inland on South Padre Island. The Cuts have jetty's on each side of the channel and your able to walk to the end and fish the jetty's or the adjacent beach area. Getting to the Cut was is what made me sweat out my hang over due to a 45 min drive on the beach with all kinds of crap washed up due to hurricanes and not having 4x4 on my suburban. We stopped in Port Isabel Tackle to get some baits (Live shrimp, crabs and shiners) and my license. We were 1st ones there that morning and unfortunately I did not take any of my own gear so I had to borrow some of my cousins old gear which I think he got at a flea market(Swap meet). It looked like a jig stick with a old PENN 500 Jigmaster knock off with some florescent green 30lbs mono that looked to be older than dirt. We managed catch some yellow perch, sheephead looking fish and some croakers which look like yellow fin croakers on a dropper loop set up. I finally hooked my first red drum and it fought great it was around 15lbs but unfortunately my cousin could not clime down the jetty to net it. The fish made last surge and I thumbed the spool and it straitened my cheap hook. I manged to hook 2 more double digit red drum and both fish broke me off at the jetty. At least I saw the fish before they broke me off, I would have released the fish anyways. We ended the trip by grillin some steaks on the beach on the habatchi and drinking some beers before heading home with an ice chest full of fish for the fish fry.

Looks like you had fun, to bad about the one's that got away. Btw just a heads up on your 4x4 suburban it's too heavy to do any "real" 4x4ing. Last summer my buddy and I went to lake Isabella in Bakersfield, the water level was low so we decided to drive up to the shore in his 2006 "4x4" surburan and low and behold we got stuck....once daylight came we saw several "craters" that where left from other cars/suv's that where pulled out.

Thanks fish hunter, I made a mistake what I meant to say was I did not have 4x4 and the beach was covered with debris like logs, complete trees, telephone poles and boats.

I love to visit the family and try to get some fishing and hunting before heading home. The fishing has always great when I go, it dose not matter if fresh or salt. I cant wait to head back to the Valley and next trip we will be heading to Sugar Lake(M.A. Gomez) in Mex for some monster bass.
