This was a last minute trip organized at the bequest of one of my AZ clients (who in the end had to cancel very last minute!), which left me going alone and missing a great T57 event at the Vine. Bummer...cause I always show up at those great get-togethers.

We originally were booked for the Black Pearl, but due to a lack of anglers, the trips were consolidated on to the Holiday (Point Loma Sportfishing). It worked out for the best IMO, as it has been years since I've been on the Holiday and I was curious to see what the boat has become. They have a new owner and new crew, and I would emphatically recommend it for several reasons:

-the crew is great and customer service oriented.
-the boat will be undergoing some serious mods & refurbishing in February
-they are agressively pricing their trips

As far as this particular trip is concerned, it was a typical Colonet trip. Lots and lots of fish to be had, but no yellows this time around. We had "too perfect" weather, which made for zero drift, and that made things tough a little, but otherwise, great Coppertone weather!

Saturday night we anchored up about 40 miles up the line just south of Pta Banda. A few of us fished until the wee hours for shark and Humboldts. We never ended up landing either, but among other fish I did pull a couple of nice chuckleheads bumping an 8oz leadhead and gulp.

As always, the pics tell the story better:

Nice freezer filler trip. I gotta do one of those soon. I met one of the crew on a local trip out here, he was mentioning all the new electronics and upgrades they are doing to that boat. Sounds like a definitely gotta try the holiday.

PS. Did you have Bocaccio sashimi?

Thanks for the report.

Those conditions you encountered last weekend looked awesome!! Your freezer must be getting full. Isn't this your 3rd south of the border trip this winter?

Sorry you got ditched by your buddies but I'm sure you talked your way into some new friendships..

Hi sansou,

As always .... great info on the report and photos. Thanks for the effort. Those islands must be full of fish. If the majority of trips there weren't basically freezer-runs, I would be tempted to try it out. Goes without saying .....no problem with bringing back a good load of fish for the family for anglers of course.

thanks,

JapanRon

Hey! Don't disrespect the Wormcaccio! In all seriousness, I think they get a little bit of a bum rap cause of the parasite issues they are prone to....however, many do not realize that cold water salmon grouper have little to no worms. And that the troof! (I draw the line at eating them raw still! lol)

Deano! Hard to believe it was only a few weeks ago that we were hanging with El Pato, eating bonito sashimi on the panga. We gotta make it back there soon! Fishing on a cattleboat and fishing on a panga are two vastly different experiences....and I prefer the former!

that looked like a lot of fun. big lings to make up for the lack of yellows

So true! Well almost...there's nothing like a yellow putting scrapes on your brand spanking new bird smear Tady!

Great job Rich.....thanks for the report

Quit being a ninny and come out and fish Mexico with us! (they got bathrooms on the boat. lol)

Looks like a nice trip Rich. Thanks for the report & pics.

What the heck are you doing in the saltwater section???? LOL See you around bro....I'll bring the crickets and beer.

Thanks FishHunter. Here's the God's honest truth: the cook is a young dude. Breakfast was good, lunch was good, dinner was mediocre. Maybe he wasn't giving it his 100% this trip.

Fantastic trip. Love the Freezer Trip. Nice Lingers.

Sans, Call me next time one of these is gonna go.

I can't hang with you professional bass circuit guys. Those flashy jackets with all the big money advertising patches scare the poor Mexican fish away! LOL

I will send you a PM on the next SW outing (end of Feb?)!

So true Ricky. Looking forward to showing you a bit of Baja in a few weeks. You're gonna love the food & fish, and your fiance is gonna hate me for ever introducing you to this vice.

great report! cool pics

Thanks man!

Chris! Whenever you're ready to hit the salt down here in SD....just gimme a ring! Give my regards to NormaJeanieWeenie too.

Looks like the weather was great, and a nice bag of fish. We need to fish the salt again soon.

It's been a while since we drowned some sardines with Paddy. Good times. Let's do it again!

Nice trip Rich, gotta love that great weather.

Arthur, you know I'm a little cheesed at missing the event. Always a good time at those T57 events.

I spoke to a guy on this boat who lurks FNN. Because of your reports with luckycrafts, he got into halibut fishing with hardbaits, but from his PB. He puts a 3 ounce torpedo on the bottom, and ties a LC110 (or any other suspending hardbait) about a foot or so up the line with a long long tag. He very slowly works the deep water with it and has had success! I thought it was a nifty LC trick!

Awesome report and some very nice pics Rich.

Wah!?! You sonova#!$#! I keep offering and you never take me up on it! LOL See you around dude!

Nice job out there Rich next time put the squid strips down and catch a yellow.

You know I love me some squid strips all bunched up on a rusty Mustad!

Hey, while your brother is gone on his gay cruise, let's steal his boat and drive that sucker to Cedros! He'll never know....we'll "black out" our fishing report pics like the LMB and Striper fishermen. LOL

Thanks!

There's no denying it: these are freezer run trips. C&R is kinda tough on a fish that traverses 300ft in a couple of minutes. Besides, can you imagine if you C&R a yellowtail on a cattleboat? ha ha!!

The islands are full of fish (well, except Todos Santos) I can't say with certainty when the first time I fished Colonet (maybe 8 or 9 years ago, and most certainly on a moo-moo), but to me, it always seems loaded with bottom fish. Winter and summer. I've never had a non-fishy trip out there. There's way too many miles of shoal and sea mounts for any one spot to be picked clean of bottom fish...gill netting or not.

You need to get out there and drive down to that sleepy town and rent a panga. They have boiler rock fishing for calicos and occasional shallow water BSBs that would melt your plastics!

Btw, I got tired of dropper-looping and fished a 8oz leadhead with a camo gulp pigtail for a while. Usually it produces a good ling for me, but this time around it seems the chuckleheads and johnnybass & sugarbass were fond of it. It gets to be expensive though because every other cast the tail was getting bitten completely off! I went through 2 packs. Never tried pure plastics w/no scent....but I think I'm gonna try it on my next trip down south for the sheer heck of it.
