Went out to Vail today with Stewart and his Dad Jim.

It was a beautiful day on the lake, the weather was great, and the bass were chewing our offerings.

We caught bass from 2ft -26ft of water running two completely different patterns. We started the day throwing reaction baits and then when it slowed down so did we and we ran a finesse pattern in the late morning to afternoon. We caught around 16-18 bass. About 1/2 way thru the day I caught a bass that was about 13 inches and Jim laughed and said that I "just caught the smallest fish of the day". Stewart shot his dad a look as if to say "dont test him".. I simply said "yep thats the smallest so far but I'll fix that."
About an hour later I tell Stewart to cast into a small pocket so he makes 4 casts with no luck... He said.."no ones home".. and I said.. "lets just see about that" so I fired a cast into the small pocket.. I feel some slight presure, set the hook and an enormous mouth rises to the top of the water as I say..."Look at this Donkey!!!" I get the bass to go down and I bring it next to the boat and I lay on the deck and lip the biggest fish of the day.. ... 7 lber in the boat!!!! :Thumbs Up::Neener Neener::Neener Neener:
That 7 lber looked like it should have been a 9 lber. It was EXTREMELY SKINNY...EXTREMELY!!

Of our 16-18 bass our best 5 weighed between 20-21 lbs..

Pete, nice job getting the custy's on some sweet Vail LMB's.

That big one you got reminds me of one of Amy Winehouse, real skinny and kinda weird looking.

Thanks for the report/pics.

I know that bass was skinnier then Paris Hilton on Crack but it was still fun to bring it to the boat and lip it. :Big Grin:

That bass looks like he has an eating disorder.

Unless there is a food source shortage in Vail (I doubt it), that skinny bass looks like it has a nematode in it's belly, sucking the life out of it! Lots of fish with that problem in Mead. Poor thang!

I always wondered about that.
Thanks for clearing that up!

And Pete...way to go!
My buddy and I went last Sunday for the second time and couldn't scrounge up very many.
We tried deeper water and shallow using many different presentations with limited success. I searched for bait balls on my electronics but didn't see any. My first time there on Dec. 12th I found lots of "clouds" on the Lowrance.

I have heard when the water warms this lake goes off.
Kinda like a Barrett on steroids (bigger fish).

Again, GOOD JOB Pete!

Ted... the bait is piled up in 40-60 ft of water but there arent many fish on it. The fish are much shallower. Its pointless to try to compete that deep with millions of shad anyway.

Im not sure if the bass have parasites, I think the lake is just overpopulated. I think they need to do away with the catch and release for 6 months or a year. Harvesting and thinning the heard some would help I think.
Just mu opinion..
