I_Like_Big_Boats has been waiting for some warm weather and asking me for a while for a fun place to rent a boat. She's usually busy working and it's not often she can get out. She's not in to the fishing so much but loves riding in boats!

I've never rented a boat in NPH but I know it's a cool place to see and a fun place to fish so I figured we try renting one of those skiffs!

We got down there and it was still a bit cool in the morning. Rented the skiff and started fishing until "ILBB" warmed up for a short ride around the harbor. Gave her control of the camera since I had control of the boat. (or did I?:Secret:)

Just got the boat.. heading out!

Of coarse the main priority was to make sure ILBB had fun too, so we visited a couple of animals throughout the day which always cheers her up. Her first bite came on the EggMcmuffin' crumbled with a backhand presentation..

Then it was my turn for a lil nubbler..

ILBB managed to find some very nice boats while on the water today

Pretty glassy, accept at the harbor mouth.

Second lil swimmer of the day

ILBB insisted I swing by the Sea Lion chillen on the dock. We went to investigate.. a couple of times  It wasn't until the thing shined us the snaggletooth that we went about our way. :EyePop:

I also tested out a sick new program today. Put a gps tracker on my iphone! I mapped out all my spots today and waypointed all my fish and sent it to google maps with the iphone! I have a pic of my exact route of travel and fish waypoints but I can't bring myself to post it. Lets just say GPS tracking on an Iphone RULES! The dang thing even showed me where to turn to get to the skiff rental and had a google maps picture of davies for me to see before I even got there. Technology is amazing..

I think ILBB wanted to add some stuff so I'm sure we'll hear from her later on here. She's already back to work! Thanks for reading our report folks. Been a while since we have been able to get out. We both got some much needed sun! :Thumbs Up:
Enjoy the pics.

Casey & ILBB,

Glad to see you 2 got out together for a nice day in my favorite :Fishing Hole:

Casey for some reason I can't figure out where you are in the Harbor!!!!!!!:Big Smile::Secret:

There is the special thing about NPH is that it can be enjoyed by those who want to get the line wet and can also be enjoyed by those who want to see the overwhelming sights of the rich and sometimes famous!!!

You just have to make it work for all those on board at the time of the adventure!!!!

I hope to see you at the Vine on Saturday and we can discuss some cost savings ways on how you get around the harbor with new friends.

Great to see the Spotties were active as I will be taking Becky and Eddie (HESBROS) down to NPH on this Sunday for a Wife and Hubby Battle!!!!!!:Pillow Fight:

See you Saturday!!!!!!

Pretty cool mang, I didn't know you could rent boats there.

A guy that my wife's cousin was dating had a place right on the water there. Him and his buddies played 'who could hook up with the biggest fish on a cast from the couch!!' Literally casted from the couch in the living room out the sliding glass door!!

Tacklejunkie nice report, my buddy & I used to rent the skifffs 25 years ago when it was $50 all day & all the live bait & gas you could handle. Now I think it's around $100 a day and a bag of frozen bait. Man times have changed.

Nice spotties, sounds like a great day.

what app were you using on the iphone to track your trip?

tacklejunkie
01-16-2009, 11:40 AM
what app were you using on the iphone to track your trip?

Motion X GPS. (there is a trail version free too. I tried it on a trip to the dentist and was so happy with it I bought it by the time I got home)

Got it for $0.99 on itunes.
You turn it on and it will tell you speed, record your EXACT route, export the route to google maps for viewing (you can then take a screenshot off google maps and turn it into a postable JPEG image of your exact route and coordinates!), allow you to make waypoints WITH photos.. etc etc etc. They are working on an update for the program to where you can enter waypoints etc. You can use the program to follow paths you prerecorded or direct you to waypoints and everything. Great program! The reviewers on itunes say it's better than using their garmin and other brands of GPS units! Not to mention it's combined with your phone! An awesome program for sure. Cannot wait to use it in some of my trout creeks to see how far back I really go and mark tons of fishing spots and map trails out!

Wish I could post the route pic I did yesterday but I don't want to give away coordinates or map details of spots given to me ;)

Matt, they don't allow you to leave the harbor on the skiffs. The bait barge is now closed for the rest of the season.http://www.pavilionskiff.com/

tacklejunkie
01-16-2009, 12:07 PM
Yes,
they threw in a bag of chovies, a bag of squid and said no leaving the harbor. I went out to the harbor mouth and found 2-3ft swelling waters so I turned back. I could see down to the bottom out there, kinda creepy!
Skiff is not a good boat to be in for open waters.

Hi tacklejunkie,

Nice report and pics. Good for you on all the fishys. At first I thought that was a Kalin swimbait but one of the last pics shows a different 'nose' shape. I noticed you had some gulp laying near by in the first pic. Anyway ...What is that thing?

Thanks,

JapanRon

I / We got to see snaggletooth yesterday and he if I took a pic it would have been identical to the 1 you posted. It looks like he has not moved in days!!

The boat ride was fun. It was really chilly in the morning, but I was thinking about all the people back east and the coldness stopped bothering me! By ten in the morning the sun was warm and the water was really clear. I could easily see the bottom of the ocean. We went to the very end of the harbor, very close to the ocean, it was really pretty! TJ was driving the boat and he went to grab something and by accident spun the boat around in a 360 and the boat went in a circle two and a half times! At first it scared me, but then I liked it and wanted him to do it again:ROFL:

It's was just nice to get away and have a peaceful day and be on the water. It works out good for me to work on the weekends when sales are better, and then take days off during the week, we ended up having the harbor all to ourselves by going on a Tuesday.

Cool report dude. I am picking up a 12' aluminum boat with trailer and motor this weekend. One of these days we need to hit nph. I'll provide the boat, you just put me on the fish. I want to get more into saltwater fishing I am going to start hitting up the wood and perris too.

Awesome report and story TJ, as usual.
You should always be carefull outside the jetty's but you could be safe and have a blast also. I have a little 12' aluminum boat with a 9.9hp and it's a blast. I've launched from the dunes and made it out of the jetty and 1/2 way to dana point before. I've also launched out of Mission Bay and made it all the way to la jolla. In la jolla i did great. I managed my first legal ling cod. Anywaise didn't mean to stray off topic, but as long as your safe, have fun.
tight lines.
p.s. if ever you want to hit up nph in an aluminum can, let me know.
