January 11th, 2009.
Boat: Native Sun
Landing : Long Beach Sportfishing
Mission: Seek out and destroy some Sand Bass

With the above mission accepted, myself and 44 other soldiers departed Long Beach Sportifishing promptly at 0700. Joining myself, General Ghetto Dad, was Command Sergeant Cappo, and Sergeant Major Mike " Puff Daddy" Hakavelli. Joining us was a civilian team consisting of future recruits Bassin Chef, Odium, Really Drunk, Ricky Ray, Scupper Scott, Big Huffy, Caeser, and Samoan Sam, along with their guests. Just when you thought this list of fishing veterans could not possibly get any larger, we had the honorable, highly decorated Officer of FNN accomponying us on this mission, Sansou himself.

The crew today aboard the Native Sun was Capt Jason, (this is funny) kevin and kim on the deck, and Sue performing the duties of cook. Jason did his morning announcements on the speaker, including where we would be fishing, and the recommended tackle for the day. We would be fishing the Izor Reef area for bass, and the ever so popular Blacksmith Perch. So we rigged up our gear, myself going with the 1 1/2 oz leadhead and 25 lb test, ordered our breakfasts, and waited patiently to arrive at the first spot.

The wind had really blown the last couple days, and us veterans on board knew it was going to be a tough day fishing. There was no forecast of wind or swell, but normally after we get hit with wind, it takes awhile for the ocean to recover. Like I said, most of us knew this coming into this trip, but still opted to give it a try, deciding it's not always about the fishing, but that it is about just getting out, and spending time with the homies.

On the way out, Capt Jason decided to stop short on a wreck and give it a try. Conditions were really tough on this spot, with what seemed like WAG conditions. Finding out there were no willing biters on this spot today, we pulled anchor, and continued down the coast to Izor Reef.

A short time later, we arrived in the area, and with our stomachs full, and guns loaded, dropped the anchor and proceeded to fish. We hit a few different spot at Izors, with the perch showing no mercy to our Sand Bass offerings. For the better part of the morning until early afternoon, we destroyed the perch, and picked a few sand bass and Cappo fish. We also nailed some NICE sheephead, rockfish, and REALLY nice cabezon, including Sergeant Major Haks estimated 8 lb fish. Unfortunately, all the sheephead and cabezon had to be released, being that they are out of season until March (sheephead and rockfish), and April (cabezon). Once the bite had really died, Capt Jason decided to pull anchor and head to some spots closer to Long Beach. It was about a 5 mile run, so that gave us enuf time to order lunch and sit back and relax for awhile.

We arrived at our next spot, dropped the anchor, and proceeded to fish. Once again, some nice sheephead came flying over the rail, only to be released due to the closed season. Capt Jason tried a few more spots, before deciding to call it a day.

Final count:
10 Sand Bass
a gazillion perch
handfull of Cappo Fish

Hak and I got 50% of the Bass count, which i was happy with. 44 people, 10 sand bass, we ended up with 2 each, so I was happy not to lose my Sand Bass Street creds, especially with Sansou on the trip with us! All in all, fishing was really tough, but the crew gave it 110% trying to put us on fish. And more importantly, we had our usual good time talking smack to each other, and just getting out on the water. Sorry guys, I only took a few pics, I think Cuz took a few with his camera, so maybe he will post them later. THANK YOU all for coming fishing with me, I had a GREAT time, regarldess of the tough fishing!

lol...yeah man....it was a fun trip...and if you think about it, if these damn seasons werent in affect, it would have been EXCELLENT fishing (over 40 sheeps and 3 huge cabs released). Its all good tho, the seasons are helping ensure the future of our sport......

Great report GD! I felt like I was there with your descriptive account of what actually took place.

Sounds like it would have been a longer day if not for the FNNers... Better luck next time when the weather settles more.

Nice winter bass report! I need to find my way out there soon, can't beat such a great deal!

Nice job w/ the bass considering being eaten alive by those pesky perch! Awesome looking beast of a Cabbie and sheeps head. Sure is too bad that they are out of season!

"Shock and Awe" on the perch & sheeps....not so much on the bass.
Armed with a 2 oz leadhead, I made an attempt to storm the sandbass bunker, but was rebuffed despite my day long efforts. All day long the perch were surrendering in mass, but the Republican Guard Turd Rollers were putting up a lot of resistance. I did liberate a nice sculpin, but it eventually got kidnapped by a LA terrorist. General Ghetto Dad retained his Turd Roller Commando status with 2 of the 10 sandies caught that day, and Private Hak detained a nice looking cabezon and a slew of sheephead, so I guess a promotion to Private First Class is due!

LBSF offering a 2 for 1 deal for trips on the Native Sun: this is a smokin' deal!

This was my first time on the Native, and I found it to be a rather comfortable boat. Tons of room and seating in the galley, and the walkways on the side of the boat are wide as heck. Captain and crew are great.

It was a beautiful day out in the harbor, and though the fish had lockjaw, being that this was a first time experience at LBSF for me, I enjoyed the scenery and watched and learned how the Los Angelinos do their thang.

OK who the heck stole my Sculpin dammit! Which was a gift from the Almighty Sansou. That was the only downside of the trip, that and the fact that I caught no legal fish. Good fishing with the homies, and finally got to meet Sansou.

Lets fish Newport next time, i heard the smallest sandbass are about 8#s.

Heres the only pics i took.

Hi ghetto dad,

Great report ... as usual. And ..... great hearing others on the trip pitching in to add their own 2-cents !! Seems like there are a couple of boats that are regularly staying waaaay in close to the breakwater or off Cabrillo or PV. Of course, Izors ain't so but ....

As mentioned, can't beat that 2 for 1, always great crew .... good feel for the Sandies, and big ol' boat !! You've got to get close to her to appreciate the room she's got. Did anyoneI mention hassle-free parking ! :)

later and thanks buddy,

I had a great time out there with you guys again ,GD thanks for putting it all together the 2 for 1 deal is awesome.I brought along my buddy Carlos ,who I been trying to get into fishing, this was his second trip and he is hooked he caught the most fish he has ever caught in 1 day . Among the fish were caught were 2 sheephead(released) countless perch, sculpin, mackerel, red rock fish?I had him set up originally with with a 25# set an 1.5 oz leadhead but after seeing the perch startimg to come over .we added a 4 ft fluoroleader and went with a 4oz dropshot set up with squid and it was steady action for a while for us. i caught a couple of nice fish worth mentioning a 5lb sheephead and a bigger sized sculpin, ans lots of perch and macs.Overall a great trip where the fishing was secondary to all the cool people that came out Hak,Cappo, Odium.. thanks for all your help out there ,Really drunk,RickyRay...thanks for the donuts,Sansou,Captain jason and his crew Kevin n Kim....it was awesome that you guys had the games on ..and last but not least Ghetto Dad thanks for putting it all together and having that deal is a great thing right now considering how tough things are in the economy, because of this deal my buudy was able to come along and have a great day fishing.....He is now hooked and I am taking him to the irvine event next week for another great time...see you guys out there.
