NEW YORK – A 140-year-old lobster once destined for a dinner plate received the gift of life Friday from a Park Avenue seafood restaurant.

George, the 20-pound supercentenarian crustacean, was freed by City Crab and Seafood in New York City.

"We applaud the folks at City Crab and Seafood for their compassionate decision to allow this noble old-timer to live out his days in freedom and peace," said Ingrid E. Newkirk, president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

PETA spokesman Michael McGraw said the group asked City Crab to return George to the Atlantic Ocean after a diner saw him at the restaurant, where steamed Maine lobster sells for $27 per pound. George had been caught off Newfoundland, Canada and lived in the tank for about 10 days before his release.

Some scientists estimate lobsters can live to be more than 100 years old. PETA and the restaurant guessed George's age at about 140, using a rule of thumb based on the creature's weight.

He was to be released Saturday near Kennebunkport, Maine, in an area where lobster trapping is forbidden.

i remember a few months ago some guy hoop up a huge roach and gave it to the aquarium i think that roach is around 18lb. hey how come that roach said is 140years old and look at the size if that the case that roach should be 200 years old then. PETA doesn't have anything to do or what!! why don't the go to AFRICA and save the seal from the GREAT WHITE. or go to BAGDAD and save the cats and dogs things like that

When I owned a pest control company they used to send us letters asking us to not kill mice and rats, but instead release them far from the area they are infesting.

Yeah. Bunch of philosophers there.

That lobster is NOT 140 years old. The age to weight theory bases that for each pound of weight the lobster is 6-7 years old. That is not 20lbs by any means! This kind of useless propaganda is typical of PETA. Remember when PETA complained to Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream about using cow's milk. They suggested that we use human milk meant for our babies to be substituted for our dairy. A better argument for saving our lobsters would be to cap off the weight limit. Even though monsters get good money they are very tough and rubbery to eat. The also have the highest concentrations of pollutants and those claws don't get lighter over time. They should put a 10lb cap on lobsters sold to restaurants. This way there are more monsters to reproduce. Also you get more tender meat per pound of weight.

Lol this makes me laugh idk how he set's his hooks or he needs to stop rock fishing.

Have you ever seen an injured dog who has been hit by a car or a cat who’s been seriously hurt in a fight? Unless they are treated by a veterinarian, these animals are likely to die from their injuries. Fish are no different: A hook through the mouth causes a serious and extremely painful injury that is often fatal without treatment. But anglers just toss injured fish back into the water—often without realizing what they’ve done.

In addition to the wounds that are caused by the hook, fish released after being caught can suffer from loss of their protective scale coating, dangerous build-up of lactic acid in their muscles, oxygen depletion, and damage to their delicate fins and mouths. Upon being returned to the water, these fish are easy targets for predators and other fishers. Researchers at the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation found that as many as 43 percent of fish released after being caught died within six days. Catching fish is cruel and unnecessary, whether they are killed on the spot or thrown back into the water, injured and exhausted.

Don't do it!

Thanks RED, I will stop fishing just for you.

I wonder if lobsters ever miss the earlier days of their youth?

Poor "Sea Kittens".. I was ready to sign up. I just wanted to ask them: If god didn't want us to eat animals why did he make them out of meat?

I am sure they would have answered that they don't believe in the same god.. It amazing. They all should have been lawyers.. "If it tastes like meats than you must release!"
