Here's something you don't see every day..

Had this old foam and carbon remote control glider wing all beat up chillin' in the closet from a few years ago.
Took it out and rebuilt it, then slapped a 57 sticker on it.

Took it out today looking for a local spot to fly it. I used to fly them in Berkley, Ca and in Acton, Ca off the 14fwy. It can be hard to find a good spot to fly them, let alone chasing the wind in the right direction of where you plan to fly it. The cool thing about them is that they are indestructible, and can be rebuilt many times.

The concept of the glider is updraft. Wind quite literally launched off a slope. Hence the coined term "slope soaring".

If you stay near the top of the slope, the glider has lift. Fly back and fourth along the slope and you can do tricks. The glider is controlled by two little servo motors that move the flaps and the remote control. No propulsion other than wind, but you have to find the ideal place to fly them.

The wind today was good but the spot I found wasn't nearly shaped right. Too much bending at the top of the slope and lots of things blocking the wind. Managed to get it up there for a couple of flights though! Was nice to be overlooking Silverwood in the background too

A couple and another lady with some kids stopped off at the turnout to investigate. I asked them to shoot some video. The lady with the kids took the first video and one kid took the other. I think the lady was kinda diggin' me  I was playin around letting her kids throw the glider off the cliff. When I Was leaving the dude who was with her sister was asking me to give her my number! :Embarrassed::LOL: I just smiled, laughed, jumped in the car and ran!

Here's the video of the Team 57 glider back from the dead buzzin' around "The 'Wood"!

Ok, hurry up!

Casey, you have some amazing piloting skillz. Watching your copter vids proved that to me.

Thanks for the post.

These are fun Alan.
They are not expensive like the helicopters.
You can crash this one all day and it's still flying when you bring it home.
Made out of "EPP" foam and "strapping tape". Then you just cover it with model airplane covering. It never really dies.. you just recover it when you rip all the covering off from smashing it into things.

They are called "Combat Wings" for this reason, and they have competitions where the point is to smack each other out of the air while dog fighting on the slope. Pretty cool stuff and one of the cheapest and easiest rc flying thing out there.

"I'm gonna go throw my airplane off a cliff now"

That was cool TJ

"Hurry up"

I tried that out before, didn't go too well....

Here's a before maiden voyage pic of my CombatWings XE2 with BL motor:

Here's an after maiden voyage pic:

Yep, no pic... no plane either hahaha!! $200.00 gone in 60 seconds

like you said, it's hard to find a place to fly them. Soaring more so than electric.

Doh! I feel ya, I've lost my fair share of models in my day
smashed couple thousand dollar heli's on accident because I forgot "idle up" before. =P
They have that new 2.4ghz spread spectrum futaba, JR and spektrum that go for like 5 miles now and don't glitch out! It's changed the whole RC flying industry. The antennae on the new receivers are like 4 inches long and there be two of them now instead of one 3 foot long. Crazy new technologies. Notice the stubby antenna on the radio!

I gotta get out to Acton soon on that huge famous hill where everyone slope glides and dynamic soars. You can fly on both sides of the spine and the place is always windy! Have to wait until I can borrow the truck to get back there though.

After losing my wing, I decided to keep my rc feet on the ground with a Brushless E-maxx, Jato and a 60+ mph RC18T. Enough excitement to keep me interested in the RC hobby. If it weren't for aftermarket upgrade parts for these things..... it wouldn't be very fun.

I nearly decapitate myself with my copter every time it goes airborne.

Foam sounds a lot less destructive.

I gotta a winch for thermal gliders.. I used to fly em' at the Rose Bowl on the grass field near my home. The winch will put a glider up about 300' in the air.
Put a tow hook on the bottom of yours and we can launch it on a flat field.
I need to build another glider. I think I have a few in box on the shelf. They are just too much fun ! That hill at the Wood looks like it has alot of lift! Nice

I see people slope soaring here all the time
On Ocean Blvd. between Paloma and Redondo ave.

Kind of far from your location but if you're ever in the area and the fish aren't hungry...

and a 60+ mph RC18T.Here's a couple of my 18th scales. I have the kyosho 4wd buggy 1/18th scale around here to with brushless equipment.. and a rolled up huge carpet track for the little pan racer

I loaded the losi up pretty good. even did piggyback progressive suspension. Haven't touched either in a few years.

Been flying R/C on and off for the last 10 years or so. Fun hobby until the motor dies right after take off and there isn't enough room to turn around.. LOL there went three months of building that kit :( Still have 4 R/C planes and just renewed my AMA and local flying club membership (Corona R/C). Hardest part some days is trying to pick between the hobbies. Do I want to catch fish or come home smelling like glo fuel. Still better than sitting at home watching TV or mowing the lawn. Just wish I could get the GF to understand that its better for the grass to be a foot tall :) hehe
BTW TJ you have way to many toys!!!

I'm trying to sell off all that old dusty hobby stuff I haven't used in a few years. It's tough to get that value back out of it.

The combat wings are immortal though. I have another larger one than in the video in the closet all beat to crud but I'm too lazy to rebuild it. I'm sure I'll have these ugly chunks of foam forever

Here's my thermal tow launch glider! I'm not very good at thermal flying though  But I never did crash it! Light as a feather and flies on practically nothing!

TJ- that thermal glider is sweet! It looks like it has a carbon fiber boom to the rudder? Nice!
round holes in the elevator to lighten it up! Bad a z z

Hey man.. You ever been down to Torrey Pines? That is a crazy flight location! They have this area down there where they allow only slope rc gliders. No pwrd flight. The rc people share the area with the Hang Gliding people that are crazy enough to run and jump off the edge of a perfectly good cliff.

We will have to go fly these together things someday!
Dude.. You motivated me to put together a new glider.:Cool:
I gotta charge up the batteries and take it along with me fishing.
Too funny!

I tought of making a small electric boat and trolling a lure behind it. It would be just hillarious to hook one!

You should bring that thing to Irvine on the 17th........ then we'll strap a micro-camera to it and you can fly it over the lake and do some re-con! LOL!

Cool video man. and thanks for the T57 rep!
See ya soon!

How I miss those shows. It's time to get back into the air and off the water. Now only if I remember to fly a plane. I'll probably go get a nextstar RTF at hobbypeople. Anybody fly? How's Whittier Narrows park?

I really loved it years ago I used to go to a flying field somewhere in the valley, but the only thing was that you couldn't go past 200 ft. If there is a flight instructor out there please pm me your rates and info, I would like to get this off into the air before spring arrives.

DS, maybe we can fly together once I'm off my feet again with the skills

So much for me getting to be my antisocial self :)

Went to the show in Ontario today!
Pretty cool, lots of good deals too. If you are even thinking of going, do it!
Tomorrow is your last day. I flew heli's indoors there a couple years ago.
