I've been long wanting to get some winter bass action and oh yea, I GOT SOME! I went on a PM trip today and we had 20 anglers totaling 118 sand bass with 2 calico bass.

Conditions: It was overcast throughout the trip with a little 5mph breeze.

Fishing: I was using 40# test with live squid and leadhead to haul those pesky bass out of their rocky structures. People that were using 15#-25# were getting busted off easily. "Go heavy or go home" is the slogan for winter bass fishing on heavy structure.

My Catch: I ended up with a total of 11 bass (1 calico, 10 sandbass). I gave the extra bass to a person that wasn't fortunate to catch anything. Most bass were in the 2 lbs average with some being 3-4lbs. I was lucky enough to win Jackpot with a 4.5 lbs sandy. =) This will be my first JP for 2009. I hope I can't top my last years 6 JP's!

If i had the funds, I'll go every week if it was my choice. But too bad, my bank account is telling me otherwise.

Are you speaking about a Leprechauns whose name i shouldn't mention.......ehh hmmm, Taurus? =)

Someone sent me a PM with a few questions regarding leadhead fishing for bass. I figure i'll post this here if it's any help.

Fishing leadhead and squid is all about the watch and feel of the line. You will get pecks from time to time but, DON'T SWING ON EVERY PECK because those are perches nibbling. You want those perch to peck on them to create a commotion so it'll catch the bass's attention. Use about a 1.5-2.5oz leadhead depending on current. Keep the leadhead on the bottom and drag and pop it from time to time. Work it back slowly until you feel a solid THUMP, then you swing like a pro in MLB, and CRANK CRANK CRANK! The swing and cranking is a very crucial 2 seconds that will determine whether you will land you fish or not. You can't fall asleep doing this type of fishing. Hence this is one of my favorite ways to target bass in the winter time.

Hi again Garrettc8,

I thought there may have been one behind you in your picture holding the nice Sand Bass in front of you. Took me back to the days when Lucky Charms was advertised on TV !

Looks like a guy that's great fun to fish along side !!
