With the BBFC trip just a week away, I wanted to get a day of practice in, so my dad and I decided to hop on the Spitfire for a 3/4 day bassin trip in the Santa Monica Bay. Got to the landing early, where we were joined by members of the Yak Club. We ended up getting out with 9 people. Got some nice anchovies from the bait barge and we were off and running. Our crew consisted of Captain Steven, Derrick on cooking duties, Morgan on deck, and Johnny doing the pinhead duties.
What better way to enjoy the ride up to the bass grounds than to have one of Derrick's famous breakfast burritos! After that, rigged up all my stuff, and Steven announced that he was going to try a halibut drift. We tried a couple for nothing, but a couple of biters. Then, it was off to the stones for the bass.
In the morning, we were in pretty shallow, and bass fishing was pretty good, and a few nice sculpin came over the rail. We kept on moving to find something that would bite a little better, and we found a spot, that produced several nice bass. I'll tell you one thing, my reflexes were crap. I got rocked and dumped a whole bunch of fish too many times to count (I think I may need more sleep). We eventually went out into a little bit deeper water, but the perch ate us alive. We were going back shallower, when we spotted a lobster buoy, which commercially, is illegal in that area. We gaffed it, and found out that it was a destroyed pot that drifted from somewhere, and it had some interesting things in it.
Baby Barber Pole (Yes, that is, indeed, a barber pole.)

That was quite interesting. By the way, the little guys were released unharmed. After finding that, we ended up back inside, where I got a nice fat sculpin that had a whole tomcod in it. That sucker was huge!

We ended the day catching a couple more triggerfish and some more bass. We had around 60 bass, 3 triggers, and 8 sculpin. A very nice day, I must say. The crew of the Spitfire will work hard to put you on the fish!
Here's the rest of the pictures of the trip. Good times, and good fishing!
