Stripers seem to be the number 1 pursuit in the aquaduct. Personally, I have caught stripers, LMB, though very few and far in between (I'm talking years) but still good sized and some monster carp. You do also catch the occasional sclupin. And of course catfish.

Good Luck.

Sorry to differ with you RamboBoy but I have caught LMB out of the aquaduct. The last was about 3 years ago right next to the 77th St. bridge in Littlerock.

There are some largemouth bass in there but not in any significant numbers. If it's in the delta it gets in the duct too. There should be some sturgeon too but not in any significant quantity either. The stripers, cats and carp are the abundant fish though.

Google is your friend, visit it often.... !!!!

Just Google Calif Aqueduct or Calif State Water Project...
It runs from No Ca through bakertucky (Bakersfield), on down to the lakes along the I-5 in the Grape Vine (Pyramid, feeds Castaic etc), turns East through Lancaster & Palmdale, then follows (somewhat) along 138 toward Hesperia on its way to Silverwood... 444 miles of it!!!!!!!!!

I have seen Striper, Catfish, Carp, sunfish (gills??), Shad, some other bait like fish?? and bass (few & far between) in the duct..

Sorry, no "Smelt", that is a Saltwater fish.... :Embarrassed:

The fishing is not easy, with the fast moving water.. Access is allowed in many areas for fishing... Look for a walk in gate at areas near roads & sign saying it OK to fish & regs...
The reports you see here are the culmination of many hrs of hard core time on the Duct....

Most of the fish are trapped in the water from the Sacramento delta area where the water comes in to feed the Aqueduct....
Many years later, it has its own ecosystem of fish & bait etc...

A little off topic but aren't Silver Sides considered a smelt? They are thick in Silverwood.

Just curious, thanks.

There are smelt in the duct. The fuss about water flow and pumping is directly related to the Delta Smelt. Stripers I catch have belly full of the smelt. Yes there are smelt in the duct.

Wikapedia says:
SMELT
Smelts are a family (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Family), Osmeridae, of small fish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fish) found in the Atlantic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic) and Pacific (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific) Oceans.

I know there are other minnows in the duct, (look like Silverside type). But I dont know what they are.????
I do know, they are not Smelt...

Just curious, a park ranger at Silverwood called those Silverside's smelt. Didn't think it was correct, thought they were minnows too.

Thanks!

Like I said "They are few and far between", but they are there.
Catching one is like winning the aquaduct lottery.

No kidding. Many think striper skunks suck, you would be depressed trying to catch a lmb or sturgeon.

Out of curiosity, has anyone ever caught a trout in the duct?

LMB, Striper, Catfish, Carp, and Shad are the only fish I've caught, not saying there aren't more.

This is a close picture to the shad I've caught

I do KNOW they are smelt!!

They are Delta Smelt.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delta_smelt

There are Largemouth, Green sunfish, Bluegills, Stripers, Carp, Catfish, Mitten Crabs and Crappie in the Duct. As far as sturgeon, I have heard rumors but have no confirmation as I have with the other species.

the delta in no.cal is salt/brackish water from the san fransisco bay and turns to fresh water the further inland you go. that is why there are "delta smelt" in the water there and the reason they are not releasing any water to us down here, has to do with the spawn of the smelt ( or lack there of). as for bass in the duct: there are tons of smallies, largemouth, stripers,'gills, carp, catfish(c hannel and flat head) along with talapia and the occasional but very rare crappie ALL OVER THE PLACE IN THE DUCT AND CANALS FROM INDIO,ALL THRU THE IMPERIAL VALLEY DOWN TO THE MEXICO BORDER!! IF YOU LIVE IN THE I.E.,DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND GO DOWN THERE AND CATCH SOME OF THE FISH IN THIS AREA.THERE ARE SO MANY AREAS TO FISH AND MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF FISHING TO DO. YOU'LL HAVE A BLAST!! DONT WASTE YOUR TIME TRYING TO COMB THRU THE FINE PRINT,ARGUMENTS AND DRAMA ON THIS SITE, ALTHOUGH HUMOROUS AT TIMES,ITS A WASTE OF TIME. GOOD FISHING!!!

oh i forgot..................... THERE AREN'T ANY SMELT IN THE DUCT :p

Not 100% on American Shad, but they are shad. If you find them you will catch a few normaly near the gates, great little fighters. I tie a dropper loop leaving about a two feet gap with the hook at the bottom. A 1/2 to 1oz weight on the loop with a 2" perch grub, I like the chartreuse color. The Srtiper will even pick these up on occasion.

Wow, those actually look like silversides (which are saltwater fish, I feed them to my Moray eel all the time -- get them frozen). If you want LMB fish either Quail lake or between Quail lake and the 77th bridge. I usually catch more LBM in Quail lake then almost anything in the spring.

Well silversides don't get that big do they, the ones I catch in the duct average 12" and up to a pound in weight. I'm sure they are shad.
