Went out today on a recon mission in some very windy conditions looking for some for after Xmas action to find the fish pretty active and on the chew. Worked the d/s for a couple of hours of fishing, got a good share of short butts and a new species from the surf but also my pb for its kind. All fish were from 12-17" and a blast to catch on my light set-up, I was using one of my light outfits being a 7' rod with #4 on the reel which I mostly use for trout or surf perch rigged with the d/s and a 1/4oz weight.

Then all of sudden I get a decent strike...not like dead weight from a hali, then it starts to take drag but I still dont feel any headshakes....so I thinking maybe a croaker or a queenfish. After about a minute I fight it to the shore and to my surprise........ its a sculpin!:LOL:....from the surf!?...15" and my pb non the less....

I didnt have a scale but im guessing it was somewhere in the 2lb range. It was a little after 4 by then and I had to start heading home cuz me and the wifey had plans to go out to dinner. All fish were succesully CNR for later on in life til our next encounter......til then, good times and tight lines!!!!

Oh man, a Sculpin out of the surf, that's cool James! :Envious:
Nice job on all the pancakes, hopefully we'll start seeing some bigger legals showing up soon.
That little guy will never make it to legal status, looks like some kind of rot setting in.
Thanks for the report.

Cool! A California Scorpionfish from the surf! A big one too! There must be some rocks nearby. I'm going to have to try the surf Halibut fishing in the local waters sometime.
