Planned on fishing Lake Mission Viejo on Friday so Simon called me at 8:30pm on Thursday to ask if I was going. He brought his friend James and I met them at the gate at 8am. Bbbbbrrrr! It cold and windy and my car was all iced up in the morning. It wouldn’t come off the windshield without the heater going. The fishing was limit style besides it being cold. We had to move and re-anchor a bunch of times because of the wind. Hardly anyone fishing the lake and the bossy lifeguard guys were off today. The backup lifeguard guys were cool to us and didn’t mind us fishing.
I put these guys on some fish right away and we had many double hookups!! Yeah!!. James gets bit hard and it comes off. Simon then gets bit and he lands the first one. These guys were using 2lb line and it was no match for these hard fighting Nebraska Trout. I don’t even know how many fish Simon and James got sawed off from. These fish have some nasty teeth. A few times Simon couldn’t stop them and the fish nearly beached themselves on the sandy beach. We were the only 3 who came in with a limit of fish today. The weight of all these fish was near 40lbs or more. The sad thing is James lost a 5lb fish at the boat. It was a fat toad too!! It would come near the boat then make a dash for it. It wouldn’t give up or go anywhere near the net. We must have lost as may fish as we caught. I landed 2 or 3 fish and let James bring the rest in. They were my guests so I let them enjoy every aspect of it. The good news is I gave all the fish to them. You could say they went home very happy. All the fish barley even fit in his cooler with no ice yet. We have a new name for the powermouse. James says it looks like a sperm so we called it the powersperm!!! Man! Did those fish start popping in the boat! It was a good day of fishing and no cold weather will keep us of any lake. Thanks for coming out today guys!! It was James’s first time on the lake.
Bait:
Inflated nightcrawlers on a #6 Owner Mosquito hook and 2ft leader kicked some butt.
The powermouse on a 2ft leader,#8 Owner Mosquito hook in any combination had them feeding like if it were there last meal.
I used 4lb Maxima line as a leader so the fish wouldn’t saw me off.
Simon with a bendo on the first fish of the day.
