Havasu striper derby

I know its a little early (derby is in may),but i was thinking of having a fish taco get together at my place in havasu thurs. Or fri. Before the derby. Striper chic and i will be there for atleats a week prior to the derby and should have plenty of fillets! Thought id throw it out there. Love to see fnn make a huge showing out there.

I have a great friend who lives in Havasu and does the Pro Bass Circuit out there. I would like to give it a try this year. The only striper fishing I have done out there with any success was small fish on trolled chovies.

This being my 5th year fishing the derby and 15+ year of "fun" fishing at havasu, i've learned there are multiple ways to troll anchovies to get different action thus creating strikes from fish that might not other-wise bite. All from the same basic rig and technique,but those very subtle are big time keys to success!!! see you in may.

Dude, i just watched your video of the striper "de-capitation" at last years striper bowl. Just for the record,we prefer cooking our striper b-4 consuming! If this is going to be an issue for you,or if it gross' you out,please ,edo not feel obligated to participate in the "cooked fish taco gathering". you will not regret the drive!!!! You can stay at the nautical inn ( tourny headquarters) or camp at cattail cove,crazyhorse,black meadows etc... I highly recommend cattail for the ammenities and the staff is way cool and very helpful! First come/served there. No reservations accepted. Down side to that is it is 15 miles south of the weigh-in spot,so either boat to/from or haul your fish in the truck up to nautical and drive back down ( about 15-20 min.) i fish 95% of the tourny within 1.5 miles of there. So i launch there,drive to the weigh in,then to the house in town.

If you are going, your more than welcome to come by and watch gary and kris make a$@'s out of themselves,as well as pick up all the beans i spill about the spots ive been killin the fish at! But we are there for the fun and not to win in,so we are more than happy to help you on to fish.

Just loaded up on anchovies. Got 80 bags to hopefully get us thru the 10 days we will be there for the derby. For those who have not fished the derby,anchovies are the must have and lots of them. We usually chum about 4-5 bags at each honey hole every day for the 4 days prior to the derby and the same for the 2 days of the derby.
Many different ways to chum including chunks and blending then freezing into blocks to disperse slowly thru a chum method striper chic and i statred using last year. It is awesome,releasing a chum slick,much like the ocean,and attracting the stripers right to the boat in a feeding frenzy as they can smell the 'chovies but the chum is too small to eat,forcing them to inhale our hooked offering with reckless abandon :)

chumming is not only legal,but with the amount of chumming that happens there during the derby,tuna would thrive for the salt content of the lake has got to rise significantly!LOL
yes,it is a must! we pre fish for a few days ,chumming each spot we catch fish. then return every day to spot check for the fish to see whether or not the chum has kept them there. 9x's out of 10 the fish will stay as long as a steady food source is there.it also attracts tons of nice catfish to the area,which we catch for food during the week. the catfishing is awesome then!

i highly recommend alot of 'chovies. ive never heard of the derby being won on artificials.in fact,95% of all you talk to use artificials b-4 the sun rises,then immediatly switch to 'chovies as the fish run deeper during the day.it is amazing how quickly the shallow water/top water bite DIES as soon as the sun peeks over the mountains!

FYI,last year we used 105 lbs of 'chovies between 2 teams in 5 days,but the fish stayed in the spots and we caught 100's of fish during that week!

sending the t-motor mount i build yesterday ( see boat section of forum)down to get powder coated today. will hopefully get it back by monday. in the mean time ill wire the fish finders and gps as well as the t-motor and will be water ready for the april 2-5 pre-fish/ house "loading" trip,where we will take down the deep freezer with all of the bait and probably do alot of the 'chovie chopping duties that weekend so we dont have to burn a day during the derby week! oh and a little fishing as wel :)

Don't know how JENSEN did but from what I heard talking to a few people, the fishing was somewhat less than appealing. Farmed a few stripers on the troll at 3 colors. Smallmouth bite was off the chain. Anything you threw at them, they took.

Thats AWESOME!!! I didn't actually fish the tournament so the pressure wasn't on me as much. I was just out to do some fishing in the new boat. I'm interested to hear how the tournament turned out.

CONGATES ON THE FINISH! tHE BITE FOR US WAS BAAADDDD!!!! WE MISSED 6 FISH SUNDAY MORNING BUT SAT. WE COULDN'T FIND THEM.WE FISHED FOR 7 DAYS PRIOR BUT STAYED SOUTH WERE WE USUALLY FISH. I HAD A FEELING WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN THE MOUTH IF THE RIVER IN INTO THE RIVER ITSELF.GOOD THING WE GO FOR FUN AND NOT TO WIN OR IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A BAD WEEK FOR SURE!
WE WILL BE THERE NEXT YEAR AND PROBABLY FISH THE SAME AREA TOO. I HATE THE BOAT TRAFFIC IN THE BASIN AND THATS WHAT KEEPS US SOUTH.
