A friend of mine showed me a pix. of him catching abalone last year. It looked to be around 20-30 of them. Sounds fun. My question is. Is this legal? And anyone know where it is found in So-Cal? thx

For those of you who don't know how abalone looks like...

Taking abalone is legal in CA but check the DFG's regulations section 29.15 for rules and regs on taking them. http://www.dfg.ca.gov/marine/pdfs/oceanfish2008.pdf

You can take as many Abalone you want in Southern California just don't get caught.
In other words it's illegal here. The link below will give you some much needed info.

If your friend took 20 to 30 Red Abalone at one time last year your friend either unaware of the regulations regarding abalone or he is a rotten stinking poacher and I hope that he gets caught and thrown in jail.

Please post the cool pics of him catching all of them abs right away.

:Big Grin:

I'd love to see them. Hurry up please!!!

It is illegal to take more than 3 per day, and you can only take 24 total per year. You can only take them freediving or rockpicking. No scuba gear is allowed. You cannot even have dive gear onboard your boat if you are engaged in taking abalone.

Where did you get the pic that you included with this post?

If it was illegal then why would the DFG sell abalone report cards and require you to tag them when you catch them?

Those cards are only good for NorCal.

Cappo is correct, no SoCal fishery anymore.

Regulatory measures taken by the state of California
during the past 30 years, including the closure of the white abalone fishery in 1996, and the
closure of all abalone fisheries in central and southern California in 1997, have proven
inadequate for the recovery of white abalone in the USA. White abalone abundance was driven
to such low levels during the height of the commercial fishery that adults do not occur in high
enough densities to successfully reproduce, contributing to repeated recruitment failure and an
effective population size near zero. The white abalone population in Mexico is thought to be
depleted based on commercial fishery data, but the status of the species in Mexico remains
largely unknown.

The above paragraphs are from this document. http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/pr/pdfs/recovery/whiteabalone.pdf

Up north at the popular hunting grounds all the really big Abs are below about 30 feet.

There are other species that are much smaller than Reds that don't yield much. They also are far less flavorful and thus are rarely collected. The Whites were so tasty and tender that they were eventually fished out. If people think that the ocean can handle uncontrolled harvesting they are mistaken. The last time I dove for them at the Islands off of SoCal was in 1996. That year they closed the White Abalone fishery, and in 1997 they closed the fishery for all abs in SoCal.

If you try to eat Abs out of the shell like the picture above shows, you would be chewing on them for about an hour before they would be tender enough to swallow. And the guts would make you puke long before you could even get one mouthful down.

Before any of the other Abalone Fiends get mad at me for that comment let me say that there are lots of legal abs to be had in less than 3 feet of water during a minus tide. Ladies and Gentlemen, you can walk out and pluck them off the rocks without even getting your hair wet. But if you want the really huge ones you will need to dive over 40 feet deep to get to the 10" and above models.

Steve, we need to return our Abalone Report Cards pretty soon.
