You can never have TO MUCH.... But can have to little...

50lb should work fine on 14' lightweight Alum..

Extra windy or strong currents may be a problem if you go any smaller......

you are more than perfect with a 50lb throling motor! you can even put that motor on a 17ft aluminum boat. you're good.

Whether or not its a 12v or a 24v has a big deal on the battery life of the unit as well.

i'm also in the market for a trolling motor when you say 12v or 24v does that mean 12v= 1 battery and 24v= 2 batterys??? does that mean they make both 12 and 24v trolling motors?

both! you need 1 bat for a 12 volt and 2 bat for the 24v.. but some models are 12v or 24v wich means that you can switch the power... though a 45,50 or55lbs thrust they will all do just about the same in your boat.. trust me i've installed penty of them.. just make sure that when you install it the norm for throlling motors is that the prop sits no less than 12" or a FT under the water line.. on a personal note.. you dont need a 24v its going to be overkill..
