The previous owner of my yak used to have a flush mount for a rod holder on it, but he took it off. He had it installed with some self taping screws and some kind of sealant. Now I wanna put the mount back on. I have already cleaned the old goo off the mount and the yak.

I want to make a gasket for it because the mount doesn't seem to have a lot of contact surface. What kind of material would be best?

I am also wondering if I should make a backplate for it as well. The deck of the yak is about 1/8". Should I use screws, or rivets? Or should I forget the backplate and use bolts with washers?

What's the best sealant?

Have you purchased the flush mount yet? Most flush mount rod holders include a gasket
or you can skip it altogether ans use adhesives like the one in the attached article:

Here is a youtube video to get you started:

If you want to make your own custom gasket just google "industrial gasket material" or
"neoprene rubber gasket material"...this is not the stuff wetsuits are made of.
Make sure they are U. V. resistant & 1/8" - 1/4" thick sheet.

You don't really need a backing as the 1/8" hull material is strong enough....but the
backing cant hurt either.

I bolted on scotty rod holders to mine. Just drill and bolt. Then add marine goop to prevent rusting. BTW, I think hook1 is having a sale on the flush mounts. Check them out, they're good people.

Thanks for the help guys. I think I got a plan of action now. To be clear, the mount I have is just a mount for a rod holder--not the rod holder itself. The one I have is actually the same old one that was mounted on there before.

It's an Attwood like this one...
Rod holder Mounting base (http://www.attwoodmarine.com/products/parts.asp?productid=809&path=fishing&category=10&gtype=1&group=0&subgroup=0&categoryname=Fishing+Accessories&typename=Molded+Rod+Holder+and+Downrigger&headername=Fishing+Accessories)
The only thing I don't know is if I can seal the hole in the bottom of the tube of this mounting base and still fit the rod holder in there. I'll have to get a rod-holder that fits into this base and see how it fits first.

Below are some pictures because I am a big dufous....
You can see that I have already cleaned off the old goop.
