I was fishing of my patio today and we have been attaching a couple small chum buckets to the dock(huntington harbor) and saw a giant sand shark about 5', so we had our lines out and the buckets have been soakong for at least a week and we were dumping a good slick. Then BAMMM a huge hit and the rod starts screaming line out, another big spotty. (good 3lbr.) Then boom another big hit and its a 3'+ sand shark, then I get nailed again and its a huge harbor smelt, the biggest by far I have ever scene so I was wondering if any of you guys have seen these giant smelt before.

I will have pics up within 24hrs.

I was kayaking sunday (see huntington harbor 6-3-07 report). Those smeltzillas as another one put it were boiling all over the place. Big SOBs at least 9-12". I had a few that thought they were mullet , since i guess mullet are famous for jumping out of the water for no apparent reason.

Hey you can catch those big Jack Smelt on small Mepps spinners or small trout spoons. They can really fight on ultra-light tackle and 2-4 lb line! Chum them up with crackers and start casting.

During the summer I've regularly caught smelt 14" long out of Alamitos Bay.

I catch 18"ers all the time here. They are great fighters, esp. on ultralihght gear as stated by others. Don't know about flies though..............

I knew those smeltzillas were jumping and I didn't want to overestimate there size, but I had no idea they were THAT big.
