View Full Version : Plan B... Northern Recon Trip. Sunday Morning 11/16/08

Originally had plans to fish with Bob (T/O) at Castaic today. But after his six hour drive home from DVL last night due to all the freeway closures, Bob was understandably, too worn out to entertain me for the day.

So plan B was put in motion. I haven't head North to Santa Barbara in a couple of months and decided to do a morning recon mission to see if anything was stirring up there. The answer would be... not really, not yet. The BSP's is starting to move in preparing for their spawning season. This should make City Dad very happy.

Sad sight to see the smoke still coming from the hills above Santa Barbara. No matter where you go, North or South, you can't escape the smell of smoke in the air. My thoughts & prayers goes out to all the people who have lost their homes to these devastating fires... heartbreaking indeed.

Conditions: Clear morning skies, mild temperature, water temperature 66 degrees, water clarity fair with little salad. Fishing the incoming high tide, moderate surf conditions, little or no baitfish in the water anywhere.

Made a total of three stops this morning starting at sunrise 6:15am. Left the last area at noon to head home. Traffic condition... surprisingly light. :Big Grin: Gotta watch my Redskins beat the Cowboys tonight!

Total fish count:
(7) Barred Surf Perch
(3) Short Halibut 13", 16" 18"
(3) Smelt
Snagged a lot of the fish.
Not a productive day, but there were indications of good things to come. :Secret:

Based on my Mike aka "Bones" patent pending daisy chain LC measuring device, this short Butt is only three and a half LC's, which equals about 16 inches.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture017-15.jpg

(5) Five LCs end to end = 24 inches exactly. :Envious:
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture010-21.jpg

It was nice to get back into the surf again. Getting back in touch with the Northern coastline and preparing for the next spike in the Halibut action.

It will hard for me to find time to fish the next month or so because this is the busy time of the season for the biz. But where there's a will, there's a way... I'll sneak out somehow, when the boss isn't watching.

Surf fishermen, get ready for the harsh winter months ahead. Break out those neoprene waders.

Until the next tide... have a good one.

Hey Mike (Bones), if the daisy chain measuring thing doesn't sell, we can figure out some other use for it...  :Big Smile:

Nice fish Wingnut. How come the BSP's are able to find their way onto an LC? I mean the LC's are at least half their size, they must be very agressive.

Nice fish Wingnut. How come the BSP's are able to find their way onto an LC? I mean the LC's are at least half their size, they must be very agressive.
The BSP's can get pretty agressive, especially near or during their spawning period which is somewhere between December thru June. The bigger ones really put up a decent fight. Just make sure that you release them during the spawning season.

Angle of the dangle?? Or that first BSP is a monster?? :EyePop:

Gary
Hey, if it wasn't for the slow days... we wouldn't enjoy and appreciate fishing so much. I've learned that even on the slowest days, you still can take something from the experience. I always ask myself on a slow fishing day... why is the fishing so poor today? Tide, weather, temperature, baitfish presence, time of day, bait or lure of choice...?
Pretty much the same questions that you should ask yourself during a hot & productive day... so you'll know what to do and what NOT to do, the next time.
About the LC chain thing... sometimes you gotta go with the flow... people will either laugh at you, or laugh with you... it's all in good fun.

Love Santa Barbara, don't love the drive too much.
Not such a bad day, you got some action at least. I still haven't been able to get out much. Need to get better employees.

Yeah, that drive is at least another hour from where you are brother.
After the busy season, you need to take some time off and relax and take a nice vacation. Do a lot of fishing to make up for loss time bro. You've been working way too hard this past year. Working hard is good, but burning the candle at booth ends is not. :!!!:
