View Full Version : Sansou & FJ74 - Muy famoso en San Quitin!! 11/7-9

Hey,
How have you been? It's been a while since my last post.
I went fishing with Sansou this past weekend to San Quitin, Mexico.
If you've ever wondered what it's like to fish in Mexico that isn't Cabo or La Paz, you gotta read this post!!

So unlike my past posts, I'm going to let the pictures tell most of the story.
--------
I met up with Sansou at his house to load my gear into his truck.
And we immediately left for the border.
But before we make the cross, we decided to exchange some US dollars for Pesos.
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB070004.jpg

Here's the ride
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB070005.jpg

So we cross through the border and drive 1D towards Ensenada.
This is the fence that divides the US and Mexico.
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB070006.jpg

And we drive...
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB070010.jpg
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB070011.jpg

These are some tuna pens we saw along the way...we counted 36 of them!!
Makes you wanna pull up next to one and fish!!
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB070021.jpg

No mistake on which country we're in...
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB070028.jpg

http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB070030.jpg
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB070035.jpg

So we drive for about 4 hours.
The whole way was completely safe (aside from the speedy Gonzales truck drivers making turns at an alarming fast speed...they really should slow down).

And finally signs that we're getting close.
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB070037.jpg

Even closer....
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB070040.jpg

Getting there...
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB070042.jpg

Bingo!
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB070047.jpg
Yes, lunch! Steamed clams and beer...how could you go wrong?

So after checking in, we decided to futz around the bay right behind the hotel.
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB070055.jpg
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB070052.jpg

We made a run to the market to pick up some ice and stuff.
I came across this pack and had to take a pic...
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB070059.jpg
Didn't realize that tempura is also used in Mexico...make you wonder what else I don't know..

The room.
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB070062.jpg

The board meeting room. That toilet is just as big as the ones used on the Spitfire!
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB070065.jpg

Then after dinner, we decided to hit the bay again for some fun.
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB070071.jpg
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB070073.jpg
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB070075.jpg

The next morning we woke up at 5:15am and headed to the launch area (35 secs away from the room!!)
Our boat for the day.
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB080080.jpg

The forecast calls for sunny day with glass like conditions on the water...
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB080083.jpg

Oh yeah!! She hauls!!
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB080084.jpg

I don't think Sansou got a pic of me working my fishy. But it made me famous in the area!
It was a 25# WSB!! I landed it on my Avet SX with 20# and my "Deadly Dick" lure.
According to our pangadero, it was the first one to be seen in almost a month!
YEAH!!

Then Sansou finally wakes up and kicks it into high gear..
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB080090.jpg
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB080091.jpg
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB080092.jpg
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB080093.jpg

We worked the area for about 2 hours until we decided it was time to hit the TUNA!
Unfortunately we never found the whole school, only a few.
I landed 2, farmed 2 and Rich landed 3, farmed 2.
We worked hard on them, but just as soon as we find them, they were gone!
Oh well.

Back at the landing...
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB080100.jpg
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB080103.jpg

The international method of comparison. The cig box.
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB080104.jpg

Our catch for the day.
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB080106.jpg
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB080107.jpg
As you can see, we had a multi-speicies day.

2 x WSB
5 x YFT

At the cutting station.
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB080110.jpg

At the hotel.
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB080111.jpg

We ate a Los Jardines Hotel down the street.
It was really good. So good that by 8:30pm, I was asleep!! LOL!
We woke up at 5am again, only this time to get ready to leave.

Last good byes....
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB090113.jpg
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB090114.jpg

Everything seemed to be okay...
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB090117.jpg

Until about an hour out...
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB090125.jpg
It seems that a semi-truck and a bus collided. From the looks of things it was bad.

After taking a dirt road path that went around the accident, we were back on HWY 1 and head for home.
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB090126.jpg

It seems that luck was on our side this trip.
On our way back, it rained, it poured in certain areas and the waves were choppy.
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB090127.jpg

Getting close to home...
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20081108/PB090129.jpg

After a 2 hour wait in line at the border...
http://tsuribaka.us/photos/2008/20091108/PB080130.jpg

Just like everyone else, I read the stories about the highway robbery that's been going. I can actually say now, as long as it's during the day, there is no way anything could have a happened. There were checkpoints conducted by the military. And there weren't enough drunk drivers to worry about. All in all, it was a good safe and slight eventful day.

Credits:
Thank you Don Eddie, Marita and staff for a great stay!
Thank you Pedro's Sportfishing and Pato the pangadero for putting us on the spot.
Thank you Sansou for driving.

Hey Big Red!

You know how big the whities get out there! Can't believe it was only this past January or so since we plundered the San Quintin area together! We actually caught a few white fish, and on one occasion I pinned a whole squid with a 7/0 circle hook, and a fat one managed to eat it whole!!

Looking forward to hitting San Q with you Pirate Ladies this February 09!!! Until then, keep your hook setting practice up with those fake whitefish (Irvine trout) !

Great report FJ74, man it looks like you and Sansou had a great time. Anytime you catch a tuna in November is a beautiful, then top it off with a wsb! Congrats on a nice variety pack and enjoyable trip. Very cool pic selection.

Thanks Red! Glad you enjoyed the read!
Those two were the first in a month that were landed in that area. It seems lately that the WSB have been elusive for a while. So when landed them the captain was on the radio shouting with joy!!

Nice report Joe, way to go on the catches.

Thanks Alan!

What a great way to end the season for me!

Honestly, there wasn't any sign of trouble at any point.
There were many Federales driving up and down the roads, military check points with machine guns and for the most part wide open roads. Just don't drive at night.

It's worth the 5 hour drive!

Thanks El Pato (Pedro's Pangas) for yet again, another great SQ fishing experience. I know everyone has their favorito SQ outfitter and Capt, but so here is mine: "El Pato", from Pedro's Pangas. Pete Hillis, the owner of Pedro's Pangas, also just as awesome, and probably a better pick for you guys that don't speaky spanish!

Highlight of the trip for me was being there when FUNJUNKIE74 landed his FIRST EVER WSB !!!! AWESOME!!! You did a nice job landing her, AND, ya got your first one on a jig.....brings a tear to my eye! Be sure to post up a pic the stone once you carve her out of the cabeza!

Can't wait to get back out there! Maybe a little between X-Mas - New Year's run? Hmmmmm????? Get some FNNers together for a little SQ Style YT & Cod trip?!?!??

Thanks for all the kind words everyone.

FJ74Oh I hear ya man. It's not nearly as bad as some make it sound. If I got away with all the crap I did messing around down there at night a road trip straight through oughta be no prob.

We were messin' around down there in TJ near revolution blvd all night one night. After hearing some of the things that go down over there I'm amazed we made it back. Man I almost lost my keys in some club and I was so drunk I could barely move  When I finally got my stuff together I found my keys and left. That was the first and last time I'll ever drive drunk too. We ended up passed out on the side of the 5 a few miles passed the border with cops waking us up telling us we couldn't sleep there an to move along, when they knew we were trashed and didn't care!

Oh man, no to mention all the nutty stuff that happened when we were down there. We did get pulled over by the federalis and it was one of the funniest and scarriest things I've ever experienced before all in the same oyster. After an hour and a lot of confusion later, they were running red lights making us follow them to the strip bar

Yes, one day I will go back and I will keep reports like this in my mind for when I do, but I stil think it's going to be a while before I go back for another crack at Mexico :LOL:

Arthur, you missed out bro.
I know you're busy so I won't rag on you, but you really should have been there.
The night time fishing was ridiculous! You would have had a blast!

BTW, do you have any good tips on how to avoid getting all caught up on eel grass?
The place is covered with it, so every cast you come back with a pound of eel grass.
Rich was getting so frustrated with it, that he changed his setup to a bobber and squid strip instead of casting a spoon or lure.

Nice Report. I've been trying to be brave and go down there. That still looks like decent fishing to me. Good job on the mixed bag.

Lizzay, "decent" fishing doesn't even start to describe it.

I know, I'm dying to make one of these trips. I really appreciate the invite from you guys. This is the busy time of the year for me and with the way the economy is going I have to stay and concentrate on the biz. :Rolls Eyes: Always hard for me finding time to fish in the fourth quarter. Sometime next year for sure!

As for the eel grass, not much that you can do about it. Time to brush up on your Bass fishing techniques. Swimbaits with a weed guard and start finessing.

Killer trip! Seeing those pictures makes me wish I had more time to fish, but I have been way too busy with school to do any real fishing trips.

If you want to avoid the eel grass try drop shotting a 4 or 5in plastic (zoom fluke or other large mouth bass drop shot minnows) with a long enough gap between the lure and sinker so the lure floats above the grass. Texas rigged (weedless) grubs also work really well spotties. You could even try some topwater lures if you feel like it!

...you....bastards.

That was the "not too shabbiest" report I have seen in ... ever.

I'm rather jeleous because while you guys were out there slaying the fishies, i was standing at a booth at a convention in San Diego. Thursday Friday and Saturday the weather was spectacular and then my boss keeps me a day longer just so that I could fish San Diego on Sunday... and Sunday it F'ing rained (as is apparent in the pics that Joe put up).

Joe - Congratualtions on your elusive gray ghost.

Sansou - Where's all the Sheepheads mang??

What a way to end the fishing year.

you bastards.

Arthur, good deal! We'll plan something for next year.

As for the eel grass, what sux is that its both growing on the bottom and floating on top.
So either way you're kinda screwed.
I think next time, I'll bring some weedless jig heads.

BSP, time is something you make....hehehe.
And there is always time to fish!!
You'll get out there soon and make us all green with jealousy!

...you....bastards.

Love,

KK

That's mighty big coming from the L3g3nd!!
Yeah, I think this is the most not-shabbiest report I've had all year!!
We'll go next year bro. Save your energy for the RF till next year.
They grow big and abundant in San Quintin!!

That looks like a fun time to me Rich.....I really enjoy fishing down there, folks treat u very nice unlike some of the places here......OFG

OFG, you've been here before? Wow. Is there anywhere you haven't fished??
You are truly an amazing angler!!

Wouldn't be surprised. There was no shortage of bait in the water.

Is this the beginning of a new tradition?!?!

Maverick, check out Sansou's thread in the Rendezvous section, he's got some prices on there and that should give you an idea on the trip cost. http://fishingnetwork.net/forum4/showthread.php?t=26758
