I've never used a GPS before, but just bought a boat with a Standard Horizon 155-C Chart Plotter--but the map card is missing-- I'll be getting one, but in the meantime I'm wondering if the unit can function in any way whatsoever without that card.

I also have the same plotter and have used it for the past 6 years or so. The plotter will work without the card but in my opinion it is worthless for any sort of detail without the card.
There isnt much to see on the plotter without the card but just general breakwater locations, shoreline locations. Once you put the card in you will be surprised at the detail and now you will have one deadly fishing tool.
The card will show you very accurate depth breaks where you can find spots on your own.
I have the C-Map Card and its about $200 or so now but it is worth the money.
