The day was august 29, 2008, roughly 2 and a half months ago. As a result of the horrible fishing that day I told myself that I won’t be fishing any more this year. I also mentioned this in the report I made. Well, I did not keep my word. I just had such an itch to go fishing for the longest time, I had to get out. So for the first time in over two months I made a ¾ day trip out of Pierpoint aboard the Victory. After spending money on tailgating at UCLA games,(I know, I know, we suck, you don’t have to tell me), I found a way to save and make the trip I did today.

Mike was the Captain, Mike on Deck with Richard helping out, and I believe Bob running the galley. The plan for the morning was to head out and set up to troll for Bonita. Then in the Afternoon we’d make a stop for the Horseshoe Kelp to get some Sheephead or anything on the bottom that wanted to bite.

We trolled and trolled all morning for a couple fish here and there(all fish on troll) but eventually gave up around mid morning and headed to a wreck hoping to gets some sculpin, perch, or bass. That turned out to be slow as not everybody was catching fish, I managed one perch. I did catch a short sandie and a couple baby calicos but that was it. People at this sport were using strips of squid, chovies, or plastics. Sculpin hit on the live bait and the plastics. Not many were caught. I did not manage one. The sandies were caught on squid.

After about an hour or two at this spot, we decided to get some Bonita again. It was around noon and we set up some trolling feathers and proceeded to get bit and found a good school to stick with us. People were fly lining chovies and casting out krocs. I decided to throw krocs and caught near limits. I had three and had a really big one come to the boat but those damn seals ate it, leaving only the head. I was thinking it could be jackpot. Not many were caught for the 19 or 20 of us. I’d say it was because of the seals. People could not get them to the boat quick enough because they were using spinning gear. At first, I used my bass set up with a kroc on 12 lb test. I managed to get two, and those two fish made me work hard. After those two, I got broken off as soon as I tried to bring one to the boat, it was a clean snap and I guess the fish was just too strong. For my last one I caught it using my jig stick on 30 lb test, but even that wasn’t enough to pull that possible jackpot in time.

After the seals overwhelmed us, we went to the horseshoe for some sheephead and other bottomfish. We used mussels caught at the bait barge, squid and chovies. It wasn’t great but steady at some stops. We made couple moves before we called it a day. The current was starting to pick up around 3 and the bite went dead, I’d say for the last hour, hardly anything was caught. I managed to get two good sized sheephead, at the horshoe and both were caught on cut squid, others managed to get some rockfish, whitefish, sheephead but very few. The jackpot fish was a Bonita, caught by me and had some serious contenders but I prevailed. I wasn’t expecting to catch the jackpot and it caught me by surprise that I won.

All in all, I consider this a good trip. After all, its been a while since I’ve been out. I plan on going out at least two more times this year. I just don’t know when.

Thanks for the neat report & pictures. Those seals sure can mess up a stop! I was on the Liberty over at Catalina back in the spring and could see the yellowtails swimming around the boat. We had to leave because the heard of seals around the boat. They acted like they owned the place. I think they did:Angry:.
I did have a good time on the trip though.
Great you goy the JP:LOL:.
