Hit Newport Harbor last Monday 11-14 with Bassmaster818

We got there and the people at the pay booth said “are you sure you want to go out ?”

Being the crazy mofo’s that we are… we said “of course we’re going out !”….

40-50 mph winds made sure we got a dose of mother nature on the ride out to the bait barge…..we got pretty soaked from the swells crashing into the boat !

Then we discover that they only have racehorse sardines at the bait barge !…damn !!!!
We get them anyway and try our luck at fishing the Devils rockpile…..or so it seemed….

It was simply the jetty but it was “HELL ON WHEELS !”
Geordy managed a quick small cuda on a gulp alive (one of my new saltwater favorites)

We tried for about 1 hr in that wind……the boat handled it well but it was just too hard to fish….SO

We moved to the back regions of the bay, near the big boats in the slips, our goal was to get a mini wind break from the boats…….

It worked, though in some spot gusts of bout 20-30 kicked up, we put the slay on…..and when we started something, WE FINISHED IT….and finished it strong !

The gulp alive outfished the live bait 90 to 1 so to speak….

I lost exact count but I know I landed 26 Spotted bay bass (a new daily bag record for me) and many Sandbass, at least 1 white seabass, and a couple real short flatties.

Geordy put on a show slayin away with the gulp as well. The Sandies and Spotties were feeling our pain real good !!!!

We only photographed a few fish….a whole lot of others felt the gamagakstu steel !

Water ranging in 8’ to 13’ was the target area and we fished the slips hard, working in and out with the trolling motor.

Id say 75 % of the fish were caught relative to the structures in 1 way or another.

4” Gulp alive minnows in the smelt and emerald shiner colors rigged on a ¼” gamagakstu jighead did just about all the fish in.

Bumped across bottom and made to fall relative to the pilings and or structures proved to be productive on this day.
Even casting near the actual boats served us fine as it's relative structure as well. Those S[potties love anything that creates an eddy or a shadow...
I fished 10 lb test but I think Geordy was runnin 17 lb.

It’s amazing we were able to even fish this day but the fish gods chose to treat us well even though mother nature took us for a ride..
Great day…..great slay..
My halibut hotspots weren’t kicking things out in the short time we were able to attack them….in short we made the best out of an otherwise un-fishable day.
