I am hoping to get out on a boat next weekend for my birthday. I know very little about deep sea fishing as most of my experience is fresh water but want to go out on a 3/4 or full day trip hopefully out of Dana Point on Saturday. Any advice would be great. I appreciate it.

Looking at their fish counts they are catching sand bass and sculpin. I'd say bring a 15 lb outfit and 20 lb outfit if you have them. If you don't have any saltwater tackle you can rent a rod and reel at the landing.

for terminal tackle I'd bring 1/2 and 1 oz sliding sinkers and some heavier torpedo sinkers (probably a couple each of 2 oz, 3 oz, and 4 oz). Have hooks around size 2 and 1/0. You can also fish with plastics, but make sure the jig heads are heavy enough. Dana Point has a small tackle shop, so you can ask them if you need anything else when you buy your ticket and check in.

You'll probably spend most of the day going from spot to spot a few miles off the coast.
