Catalina Charter For a Variety of Species

Hi there guys,

Catalina Trip

Went on a Trip with 18 of my fellow K of C Anglers Club members on the Tradition out of Pierpoint Landing to fish Catalina this Wednesday. Everybody was looking forward to the usual fun trip and the wide variety of fish Jimmy … and his willingness to put us up near the beach and in the kelp. We were also a bit psyched on the slight potential of getting a ghost … er … croaker …. er …. White Sea Bass ….. and or Yellowtail ….. except me. WSB … YT … big deal ….. give me Calico every time.

Although owner/operator Jimmy Hon had racked up some pretty good numbers recently on the WSB, we weren’t to get any hook-ups this day. With Jimmy’s skipper’s talents ….. and good fellow-skipper buddies we still had the best shot possible with not doing an overnighter. So it was Jimmy at the helm and the always-quiet Mike handling deck duties with the usual aplomb.

Recent Trip Tally for the Tradition:
18 anglers: 1 Yellowtail, 18 WSB, and 15 Calicos …. But not today.

Note: Countdown It will be ONLY 16 days days, now until the limit for White Sea Bass goes from the present1 fish per angler per day to 3 fish per day June 16th!! I think everybody has just about got used to the WSB bite shutting down when the more liberal bag limit increases. To compound this trend, we’ll have a new moon around June 15th!!

Target Fish: White Sea Bass, Yellowtail, and Calico Bass

Short Report- Wednesday 05/30

18 guys caught 116 Calico Bass, 22 Sheephead, 23 Whitefish, 1 Barracuda, and 41 Perch. Average 10 fish a person. Caught a number of other fishys including Senoritas, Sculpin, a couple of Bat Rays, a legal and a few short Barracuda, and a species of flounder or Sole not readily identifiable.

We could have bagged lots more fish but the fact is everybody was satisfied with the amount of fish they decided to keep as we could have caught lots more but that would be just playing the numbers game. That’s not our clubs’ style with our way-higher average age and pretty layed-back attitude! Of the perch, there were lots of really nice fat fish. Tons of just 12-inch Calicos we didn’t keep and the usual dinks. No confirmed WSB or Yellowtail hook-ups.

Sheephead Wins It

Congrats Linda! A Sheephead was the winner today. The 3~4-lb fish was caught in less then 100 feet of water, using ….. Squid on a dropper-loop rig fished at anchor. We had live Anchovies and Sardines too!! The two main contenders for the jackpot were Sheephead.

Little House on the ….

Wow! Pretty nice looking bait receiver. I think I counted 12 individual bait compartments. Looks like we might get some super-cured bait this Summer. That little house …… comes with air-conditioning, shower, and who knows what else!! Didn’t see a satellite dish for cable or internet!! Bummer! They do have a VHF radio but forgot the channel. Doh !!

On the bait side …. we got mostly big Anchovies with a few Sardines in the mix. Bait rode the boat to Catalina and fished well throughout the day! Long Beach Bait Co. Hotline number (562) 714-8103 http://www.longbeachbaitcompany.blogspot.com. Welcome to the harbor guys!!

Round-Up

3 Rounds

Mid-Island, Frontside

Round 1 Having left at dark thirty we got to the island nice and early. Water was beautiful … just beautiful with a nice color and yet 15~20-foot visibility. A nice breeze that kept things cool generated a slight ripple on the water which helps when fishing the plastics near the surface. The current, although weak initially, began to pick up considerably during the mid-am fishing.

Dropping the anchor around 8am we didn’t see any fellow-moos or much company initially other than the numerous sailboats and big yachts that must have been at anchor in some of the bays and coves since the night before. Fished fairly close-in to shore and fairly shallow for a pick on the Calicos. It was the usual routine where one catches a few of the better fish initially and then the smaller fish follow. And …. As we were chumming …… ya we were able to chum with the dogs at a good distance away …. a number of the better fish remaining were sorta hanging out on the outside edge of our casting range which by no coincidence is also where a structure break often occurs. Doh!! Typical ……. but whatcha gonna do!

Gave the spot a chance to build but alas it became obvious after about 30 minutes or so that the fish there weren’t gonna really turn on big-time and there weren’t any signs of a different flavor fish coming through so we moved on up the coast a bit. Guys were fishing fly-lined anchovies or soaking Squid … except for me tossing plastics. Caught my share of fish on a variety of plastic swimbaits. Mostly dinks on the smaller swimbaits as others were live-lining those big ol’ anchovies and they got first choice.

Hit a number of spots (picking up a few fish at each spot) to complete the mornings fishing, some more productive than others. Fished generally pretty tight to the same depths and structure …. give or take a little more or less rocks and veggies. Still no cigar on the WSB or YT and hadn’t seen any birds working off in the distance. We had to move a couple of times a little early (bite had little time to build) to keep from getting a bunch of dogs on us or even worse ….. to stick to our tail.

Setups were … in the main ….. live-line, some dropper loops, Carolina sliding-egg sinker (1/8th to ¼oz), and good ol’ leadhead/whole Squid rigs. Some anglers used both cut as well as whole frozen for the Bass, Perch, Whitefish, and Sheephead.

Up the Coast
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h313/tsurikichi/FROM1229/FROM0422/0530uptheisland.jpg

Round 2 Made a comparatively long run of 20 minutes or so up the line to hit some new spots a little further off the kelp line but ……… still closer than we are used to fishing. Fished inside some kelp strands as well as a few reefs and their drop-offs for a steady pick on the Calicos and other species.

Everybody pretty much used the same rigs in about the same depth of water (within 100 feet) we had been fishing all day. Fishing was easy although the current was picking up and wind getting stronger making it tougher to avoid getting tangled with some kelp one hadn’t noticed! (See last aside) We took off around 3:30 or so and got back to the landing by 6pm.

Heading Back!!
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h313/tsurikichi/FROM1229/FROM0422/0530widcatreturn.jpg

Round 3 We again went back down the coastline a bit to hit yet a few more spots until it was time to head home.

The Perchys were going wild and a good mix of Whitefish and Sheephead kept those busy that had gotten enough Calico Bass. Again we fished inside or adjacent to the kelp. Caught most of our fish in this area. Most guys by now were going pretty light to avoid going too deep and thus really get tangled in bottom structure and the kelp. Lots of fish were up in the water column. Truth is …. we left the fish biting but we wanted to get back to the dock by 6pm or so.

Conditions: Skies were clear and sunny after the overcast burned off. Air temp stayed in the 60ºs during the fishing day. Constant breeze made things feel cool then down-right cold for us old guys later. Jackets felt good the first and last part of the day.

Wednesday’s Conditions

Fishing Grounds: Overcast burning off around 12:00. Air temperature was 60° during the time on the water. Wind-chill factor didn’t factor in until the usual afternoon blow on the way back over the channel. Water clarity was fantastic. Visibility was 20+ miles … I could see PV !! Current was up as usual but at least it didn’t switch directions a couple of times. Slight chop. Water temp was 64°. Note: Red Tide still inside the L.A. harbor (east end) and maybe 15 minutes (that I noticed) out of the breakwater.

Wild Creatures: Had a little harassment from the Sealions. Pelicans and Seagulls were hanging around. No eagles, no whales, but I think there were some propoise

Asides

Seeing Red!
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h313/tsurikichi/FROM1229/FROM0422/0531powerpro.jpg

Phantom Red

Aside: Ok …. I’m a sucker for something different. I once used nothing but Ande® line in the pink as I thought it had less visibility but later turned to other lines and mostly choosing clear flavor. I’ve used Power Pro® from 5 years ago when it was sold under a slightly different brand name ….Professional Pro or some such thing but now I’ll now try out some of ‘that thar new fangled strang’ … that is …Power Pro’s PHANTOM RED micro-filament line. This spectra-weaved line touts that it’s better than past models including being thinner but I see that the specs still show (as did my original spool) 300 yards at 30lb line-test with 8lb test-line diameter. Thinner …. maybe 1 nanometer ….. no marked difference for us anglers anyway!!! Suggested Line Splicing Knot: Albright or Reverse-Albright suggested for connecting lines where the mono leaders is of a larger diameter than the main brai …. Ops ….. I mean Spectra® weave line.[/

Another Aside: KIDS FISH FREE campaign. I believe this is one of the more successful programs that landings ….. specifically Pierpoint Landing and her sister-landing Marina Sportfishing…… does for the Summer school vacation promotions. The campaign lasts [font color=’red]June 21~July 23, is limited to weekdays only, valid only with 1 adult, full-paid fare, and with a reservation. ½, ¾-day boats qualify and, as one would think, the Thursday and Friday Twilight or what they call the Sundown runs. Further details may be available upon ones calling for reservations. Check your favorite landing for possible campaigns.

Yet Another Aside: Sardines vs Anchovies: What the ….. !! I gotta laugh We got a nice bunch of healthy …. abiet …. bohunk anchovies from the receiver with a few Sardines mixed in to boot! One buddy fly-lineded the dines for at least a couple of hours straight for the big boys for not a single take nor even a bait dinged. He said every dine died of old age cuz none of them had been touched ….. that’s without a single scale out of place. Another guy fished some smaller macks going for the home run to no avail.

Last Aside This comment is for mostly the newbie. Depending on the wind strength and direction, swell direction, current strength and direction you may find that an area where you’ve fished before (or vice-versa) that seemed to have little kelp or it was well submerged …. is now a veritable giant kelp paddy you could almost walk on!! This is especially obvious when there is a big difference between the height of the tides when you previously fished the area and present conditions. In the L.A. area, in normal conditions, low, low tides can be –3 feet or more while high tides can climb to +7 feet. Of course, few times are the extremes are juxpositioned.

If one thinks about it in any detail, anglers/boaters might not be able to gain access, exit or even minimally fish areas having choice structure with this sort of thing going on ……

http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h313/tsurikichi/FROM1229/FROM0422/0530LBbaitwid.jpg

Really Last Aside: The Long Beach Bait Company has a beautiful 12 bait compartment (at least) receiver now located at the east end of the L.A. Harbor with the other facilities. Got some very healthy abiet … bohunk Anchovies that stayed very flippy throughout the day. Long Beach Bait Co. Hotline number (562) 714-8103 or for further details …. Not affiliated with operation.

Great report as usual, Ron. :thumb:

Too bad you didn't get into any yellers, but I'm sure you'll be out there a few more times this summer.

That new bait barge is pretty slick - competition always makes things better. Look forward to hittin them up this summer.

Good report, Ron.

Does the Tradition have a weekly open party schedule, or is it a chartered boat?
Looking to get out there in the next few weeks and want to hop on a boat that goes to Catalina.

Hi jobi888,

Our club has a long history with Jimmy and the Tradition (old Pierpoint) and we're hoping to make a once a month charter for our club members.

At this time the Tradition is strictly a charter operation. Don't think we haven't been pestering Jimmy to do some Catalina 'in-the-kelp' limited-load, open-party trips for our club. By doing such trips .... his charter business would get more bookings too IMHO.

Let you know if things change as he is one skipper that you will take a liking to immediately I'm sure.

Oh yes ..... if you're thinking of an open-party boat trip to CAT ..... check out the Liberty with skipper Anthony ......... who are running trips out of LBSF.

As a strictly Cajun Red man this year, anything red is catching my eye.
I've been staring at the Power Pro Red Braid.
How did it do for you?

I'm thinking of spooling my Penn 955 baitcaster with 30# braid as backing to the Cajun Red.

Thus far, my "experiment" with the Cajun Red is finding that the bottom dwellers are completely blind to the stuff. But anything in the top column is getting a little spooked.

It's going to be a long season for me this year....

ThanksKK

Hi funjunkie74,

Glad to hear you are making a strong effort to test the Cajun. Just the guy to give it a strong workout with your increased fishing.

Initial impression on the 'Red' is that it felt like and cast like (maybe 10 casts only) 5 times stiffer than the stuff (Same test but white or cream color) I got about 4 years ago. Reminds me of my favorite line .... the old Spiderwire green braid. Still using it .... even with the line stretched and the 'filler' that goes between the strands in the braid finally leeched out and gone!!

Fishing it with the Barracuda next week will be the first real workout I give it and we will see if your observations hold true for the braid. I fear you may be correct. Reason:

I believe the Cajun line is popular with guys fishing Redfish and such where there is lots of discolored, muddy water. Catalina waters doesn't give any line a break with its clarity!! If the red tide stays around locally til next week, I might be able to test it in that water color.

The thing about the red being the first color that fish cease to see ..... interesting that the most productive swimbaits for Calico have tons of red in them. Barracuda and Bonito love the clear/red metal-flake blams.

All we can do is fish and observe.

Await further results,

JapanRon

Isn't fishing fun??
So much to learn, so much to try...never just one answer for anything.
Every different condition, every different situation calls for a different solution. As a fan of your reports, I always enjoy the dedication (also called "stubborn-ness" by many) of how and what you fish with.

It is hard to base any kind of valid judgment for anything just because someone said "that s**t sucked!". How hard did you try to prove that it does indeed suck or doesn't suck? How long did you try? Where were you and what were the conditions?

Your reports provide insight into something that most people do not have...patience. Keep trying a certain setup. Get skunked...oh well~. No big deal, maybe next time. What a great attitude!! Maybe you learned something (or not), but bottom line, YOU HAD FUN!!

JR, keep fishing and keep writing. I know I will!! 8)
