You release it to float off and die...

Unfortunately, you have no choice.

Don't get caught with it ..... Let the sealions eat it so they get healthier and we can have many more of those cute furry creatures.

Oh... by the way... do search more and make sure C. Cods have a similar Internal organ make-up. The one I posted is for LMB's (that's what I fish for).

Well, that might take care of the bladder but the eyes that are bugging out with bubbles inside them due to the pressure probably won't "fix" themselves. Its just a waste, I remember in the good old days when I'd use a big 6/0 with 80 pound dacron and a 2 1/2 pound rod cod jig and catch 30 pounders form 400 to 600 feet deep. You pull something up from there and its dead.

Say you caught it in mexican waters :-) J/K
Whenever I fish at spots known to have cowcods, I just take my time and reel up my fishes slowly.

I have caught many Cows, including several since they became protected. 99% of them will not make it back down no matter what you do. I have seen them try to swim down and then come back up floating again a short while later.

These seem to be sensitive fish, more so than other cods.

Sadly, even if their eyes are not popped out, they probably are going to die if you put them back in the water.

In fact, I have NEVER seen one go down and stay after release. But I guess it could happen....like getting all the numbers on a Super Lotto ticket!
