Hello everyone!

Me and a couple buddies are going to rent a skiff in Newport harbor for a day this weekend, and would just like to ask any NPH veterans for some tips and advice that may help us avoid the dreaded skunk. :Twisted:This will be our first time fishing NPH so any advice would probably be very helpful. Im very excited, ive been wanting to fish this area for years and its finally going to happen. Thanks everyone! Please pm too

If you want semi-free bait, buy an umbrella net and go net some smelt. M street dock has a ton, but PCH bridge has better quality ones. Nearby the right jetty there is a narrow strip of sandy bottom about 20 yards off the jetty where you should drift your live bait. You will get a ton of shorts, but you'll have fun and might even get a legal. Good Luck

If you wanna get fish on artificials nothing beats gulp nuclear chicken, just about any bait works. Try the 4" shrimp, the swimming minnows, or the 5" jerkshad. Anyone of those in that color and its hard not to get bit. Another thing, light line or a long flourocarbon leader is imperative whether you go livebait or artificials. I usually fish 6#; 8# with crankbaits, or 4# if the water is relatively clear
