View Full Version : One Hour in the Local Surf... Check out my New Waders! 9/21/08

Wingnut

Actually they're not waders at all. Dug out a couple of my old wetsuits. Haven't got on a surfboard in about ten years... bad knee. The wetsuit still fits, barely. Why haven't I thought about doing this a long time ago? No more water filled waders.

Only spent about an hour in the local area surf this morning. Had a family emergency and had to leave rather quickly. Didn't have time to throroughly test the wetsuit and a handful of new custom LC creations.

Here's a quick recap. Fished from 7:30am to 8:30am. Light overcast skies, mild surf with light vegetation. Moderately clear water at 68 degrees. No other surf fishermen in sight, only a couple of local beachcombers and a spear fisherman.

One Barred Surf Perch, one short Halibut and one short Calico Bass. I'm going to keep my legal Butt streak intact due to the short session.
Lost a LC to the rocks... hate it when that happens.

Beautiful secluded beach.

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut2/Wingnut3/Picture001-22.jpg

No waders... imagine the possibilities. Can't wait until I get a full session in the surf.

Frank (Nessie) I didn't get a chance to really put the Carbontex drag upgrades that you put in the Lunas to the test today. None of the dinks I caught pulled drag!

I haven't been out in the surf for a couple of weeks and was looking forward to hitting it hard today for a good workout, but it was not to be... next time. Just happy that all is well with the family crisis. :Big Grin:

It's back to killing Stripers next weekend... the surf assault will just have to wait a couple of more weeks. Until next time... remember to smile, a lot.

Arthur (Wingnut) :Envious:

"If opportunities doesn't knock... build a door."

Extras:
This spear fisherman popped up right behind my LC. Scared the crap out of me. He stuck himself a legal Butt and have a nice 20 inch Calico in his sack. How a Calico would stick around to get itself speared is beyond me. He asked me to measure the Hali for him (23 inches). What if it was short... what then?!? That was supposed to be MY legal Flat Boy.

Parting shot:
Arthur: Wingpug... I'm home! Wingpug, where are you...?
Wingpug?... where is that Dog?!?
(Walking up the stairs) Wingpug... I'm home... where are you little girl???
Oh, there you are... huh... what are you doing?!?

Wingnut Pug: I'm studying...

Arthur: Studying... studying for what?

Wingnut Pug: For the Legends of the Surf Event next year!

Arthur: Uhh...umm... okay, carry on...

Wing,

Short session or not it's always fun!

I like using the wetsuit sometimes also. It's not only warm and confortable but you float and bounce off stuff that would have wacked you. The water was very glassy today down here in Orange Co and the swell has dropped since yesterday. Hopefully, this week will be good for surf fishermen and striper fishermen alike!

I liked the books. Is the one under the wingpugpaw Zen and the Art of Surf Fishing?:Rolls Eyes:

Let us know how you did on the stripers and good luck!

Arthur,

Sorry your trip was cut short and glad things are OK!!

You'll get them next time as always.:Big Grin:

I like how you are always thinking outside the box to gain the advantage on others. The Wet Suit is a great idea. Shorts for the summer and long for the winter!!!

Better yet no need to be and ACROBAT with great leaping ability!!!!!:Bug Eyes:

I have one :???:though?

How did the tuck your head and dive under the wave technique work with all the other gear strapped onto you work that most surfers use to get outside of the break?

Look forward to your next report and ingenuity as always!!!:Envious:

I can't get out this week again due to work.:Crying::Angry:

Sweet Cali, Hali and the timely BSP! I don't know how the heck you always get those things to eat that big ol lure!
The wetsuit sounds like a good idea for when it comes time to land that monster! (don't want to have to worry about landing a fish and the wader bailout routine at the same time if you take a wave!)

Keep up the good work and surf fishing innovations. :Thumbs Up:

I saw him pop up & down out there in the distance and thought it was a Seal at first. Then he came up right in front of me. Got some good info. out of the guy. There are some interesting things down there. :Secret:

Nice going Arthur. I would think that Spring suit would be good till the water temp. drops. Thats what I use to call those back in the day. Don't you get hot in that suit? Thanks for the post . I always enjoy reading them.
They still call it a spring suit Patrick. It was quite comfortable, I wore the thinner neoprene suit. You can buy them in different thickness to deal with the conditions. I have several spring and winter suits that caters to all weather conditions.

Wing,

Short session or not it's always fun!

I really like using the wetsuit, but will still use my waders in most applications. I don't go Kamikazi in the surf all the time.
Your book Bill, "Surf Fishing, the Light Line Revolution", was the first surf fishing book that I read before I started heading out there. Dana sent me a copy... really helped me prepare and gave me a good idea what to expect.

Arthur,

Sorry your trip was cut short and glad things are OK!!

I think the Perch are like a school of saltwater Piranhas, they hit the lure thinking that it's a baitfish and try to stun it. Then the school moves in attacking and shreading the baitfish. When I hook up to a bigger fish, I usually start backing up towards the beach right away.

Wow Arthur calico from the surf!!! Testing new line again? yo-zuri or izor?
Nope neither, when I know that I'm going to be fishing an area with lots of rocks, I go to a strong mono. That's actually just the plain Trilene XL mono, cheap & reliable.

Broadening your horizons with the wetsuit, works, but you get too hot. Time to learn some new species I think. Hope the bum knee wasn't the family emergency.
If you wear the correct neoprene thickness, it is quite comfortable. Need to get out on that boat of yours one of these days and get a new species. The knee will never keep me from the surf, just can't do all the crazy stuff like I used to do, like extreme snowboarding. An old motorcycle accident.

I have no idea why more people do not use wetsuits instead of waders. I have been meaning to get a wetsuit top to use when it gets really cold.

Could you do me a big favor and not post an incredible surf report (10 halis in one day, stripers out of the surf, more white seabass, 50in hali) until after October 4? That's the day of the SAT, and seeing good surf reports just makes it a lot harder to study.

Anyway, good job dealing with the short session, and my prayers go out to your family.

Yep, i recognize that place  I was actually planning on heading out there Sunday, but decided not to the night before. I went on Saturday but got there late and missed the morning bite (and a parking space... had to walk quite a ways). The surf was very heavy and nothing was biting. There was a period when it calmed down a bit and I got a nice bite, but it got off and right after the huge sets came back in and it was dead.

2250+ and USC/UCLA/Stanford here I come!
Trust me on this one... go to USC!!! :Big Grin:

Well Halijedi, I personally don't fish with a pink LC, but someone I know does. :Big Smile: It's the "secret" HOT color. :Secret:

HMMMM,

WN I see where the success comes from. WNPUG studies during the week and gives you the PUGSNOTES version for a successful weekend. :)

VICTORIAS got her secrets and so do you. I guess all the hours you put in fishing you gotta be comfortable. Now we all see what you really wear under your waders, JK.

I am so glad everything turned out good for your family. Good luck this weekend and I'll be looking forward, as always, to your post. Take care.

NG
p.s. I start PHYS THERAPY on the 30th for my leg, woohoo!!! Can't wait to get back into fishing.
