Volunteers were needed for the 976-Tuna Youth kid's fishing on board the City Of Long Beach on Saturday 8-20-08 so I called Philip Friedman and told him I would be there to help out. This is probably at least the sixth time that I have gone on these kid's fishing trips and each time it's a blast. Many of the kids have never been on the ocean before let alone pull on a fish. Got to the Long Beach Marina at about 12pm and met up with Philip and we were just waiting for the City of Long Beach to get in from is morning half day run. Today's group of kids would be a group of boy scouts from Rancho Cucamonga. Sorry I forgot which troop number they were, but they went by troop "T2K" as a nickname. With about 35 kids and adults on this event we boarded the boat along with the other anglers for the afternoon trip and we headed out about an hour's cruise and we wound up just past the oil derricks and fishing in about 250ft of water. 8oz sinkers were the minimum and there were still quite a few tangles. It was a pretty slow pick on the rockfish and most of them were pretty small but for the kids it didn't matter, they were at the rail winding up on fish. With the help of the deckhands, myself and fellow 976-tuna member Will Ebersmith we were able to help the kids get them setup on gear, bait and out of tangles when necessary. Quite a bit of variety of rockfish were coming up over the rail, reds, chuckleheads, salmon groupers, sand dabs and a few others were the typical variety of the day. A few short moves here and there or to reset the anchor was needed to get back on the fish but for the most part we stayed in the general area. By 5 the captain called it quits and we were on the way back to the docks.

No exotics or real big fish were caught but seeing the smiles on the kids faces is what this trip is all about.

The 976-Tuna Youth Fishing group is going to be having another event this coming Saturday and Sunday (September 27 & 28) also. If you would like more info or would like to volunteer please contact the 976-Tuna office at 310-328-8862.

Man, if I didn't have to work this weekend, I would definitely volunteer! The look on those kids' faces was priceless. If you have any trips like this lined up, please post. If I could have at least two weeks notice I could arm-wrestle el patron for a weekend off. Besides being "the right thing to"--these trips look like fun. Word!

I would love to help but I already have this weekend booked...if I know ahead of time I can schedule it...

I'm not concerned about any tickets or so forth, I'd just be there to help.

Please post up in the "rendevous" section ahead of time next time.
I'm sorry I can't make this one but the odds are good that I'll make the next one.
Good going there friend.

Good luck to the kids this weekend,
Gary
