So it has been some time but on 9/13 i went out on the spitfire with my step dad, my cousin in law and his dad (who flew out from New Jersey) mind you none of these guys ever go fishing so i was the resident line man for the day lol.
The woman folk were at my cousins baby shower while us men when and did some fishing.
Got out to Redondo at 5:15 and there were already a good amount of people waiting in line, i was surprised since the boat counts had been light from what i had seen. I would say about 30 people joined us that day. Found out that we were gonna be heading out to Catalina for the day.
We load up on the boat and we got the left back corner not to bad of a spot and it ended up paying off when we went deep.
So we load up on the bait and i crack my first beer (gotta keep it real for my BBFC boyz haha) Then we make the 3 hour tour to the island. The water was calm with no breeze and no waves, it was also overcast sort of looked like we were on a huge lake. Temp was about 70 to 75 degrees outside for most of the day and it was also overcast all day too.
Captain makes his announcement telling us the fishing has been tough but he was gonna try his best to put us on some fish.
We pull up to the first spot of the day on the front side of the island. Load up on dine', chovies' and squid strips. First thing i see is a ton of perch and baby macks everywhere under the boat. I set my step dad up to slay them bad boys and the other guys and myself went with the live bait rigs fly lined. Fishing was not too bad but most of the fish pulled were blue perch and macks with the occasional small calico. I ended up pulling in 2 calico's that were about 14" a bunch of small ones. My step dad was slaying the blue perch, my cousin in law was slaying the small calico's, and his dad was on the big ol skunk. We fish that spot for a few more hours and then pulled up to move further up to the northern end of the island. The fishing here was very bad with hardly anyone getting anything but perch and small sheephead and macks. I rigged us up for perch and we played with them until we moved again. This time the capt said he wanted to try the tip of the island for some deep rock fish. So the boys ran in for lunch and i made haste and re-rigged all 4 rods with 8oz of weight and 2 hooks on the dropper loops. Finished just in time to stop for out first drift in about 200 feet of water. We drop down the boat starts going crazy, people are hooking up left and right. Tons of different rock fish loads of double hook up for everyone on board or at least on my side of the boat. We reel up to go for the second drift. My step dad hooks into a nice fat 5 pound salmon grouper (biggest fish so far on the boat next to the 4 pound calico that someone else caught on the first stop). We were all jazzed because that means he was so far the leading man to get jackpot. Everyone starts hooking into the SG's. We pull up again and make the 3rd drift this time we are in about 250+ feet of water. I drop down and right as i hit bottom i feel a huge tug on my line. I lifted up the tip of my rod and felt tons of resistance. WOOOOOOOOOOOT i'm thinking i got a monster, this thing is heavy whatever it is. After reeling in and fighting the fish for a good 10 mins i get to see some color and it ends up being 2 big SG's They gaf the fish on board and it ended up being a 6 pound SG and a 5.5 pound SG. (hellz yea i got the jackpot fish now) I caught the two biggest fish on the boat on the same line in one shot lol. So after a round of high fives and someone bought me a beer we get back to fishing. We did about 4 more drifts and everyone is still doing great but they were all SG's so the captain makes the decision to make one more move back to the side of the island for some more bass action. My group all is burnt out so they go to the galley and sleep and eat. I tried my luck for some more bass with no love. We pull up and head back in around 3:30pm.
Time for the weigh in. I bring my fish up and the only person that trys to out do me was my step dad even tho i told him i beat his fish by far hahaha. So i ended up getting jackpot for the first time ever. When i won i said "This one is for the Bad Boyz!"
After a few people got me some beers we got back into port and headed home. All of us beat but happy from a fun day out in the salt.
To bad none of you bastards were out there with me but i repped the BBFC for sure.
