I will be going on a 5 day trip in August aboard the Royal Star. I am curious for those of you that do these kinds of trips, what tackle (Rod & Reel & line) suggestions do you have?? I believe we will be fishing YFT ,dorado, and yellowtail. I have visited the Royal Star site and have reviewed their suggestions, I am just interested in yours....
Thanks,
Fresh One !!! (Mike)..........

1 30#-40# setup for the YFT...
1 80#-100# dropper loop set up for the YT
You sure that isnt backwards???
YFT of any size will kick your *** on 30#..
Y/T only get to maybe 40#+..???
I wouldnt dropper loop for either...??
Im by no means an expert on big game fish, :( :( But have caught a few..
.
Frank I'm positive....lol
80 to 100 pound dropper loop for the big yellowtail of Guadalupe island....If you used 40# you would not catch a fish there..
The YFT are more towards the surface there and thats why you use 30#-40#...Usually most guys will you straight spectra with 3-4 feet of 30 or 40# topshot...
Now this is for a 5 day that will go fish the Lupe....If it goes anywhere else then I'd be backwards...lol

Bring atleast 5 setups.
20#
30#
50#
80#
100#
This way you cover all of them. Better to have it and not use it then not having it........

nothing less than 30#
30# with a 700m or similar for alba ca-ca
40# bait for alba ca-ca
50# iron 700H for the yellows at cedros
50 or 60 2 speed 765 grapfighter bait just incase there are BFT around and the bigger yft at the lupe.
60 jig on an Ulua sling-in 7x's
maybe 80#, but the boat will have trolling rods so you will not need it unless you want to drooper-loop it. but i would focus on the other set ups.
circle hooks and various iron, 6x jr and 7x lights if you can wing them on a smaller rod.
with specetra on everything.
that was the main focus on the rooster a few years ago when i worked on it.

Thanks guys,
My trip leaves in early August, I just want to be as prepared as possible. I will definetly check with the landing before we leave on jig colors. I have most of the gear that has been mentioned..and then some. I will plan on bringing a 30,2-40's, a 50, a 60 and an 80-100 # setup just to cover all bases. I just found out that I am going with a seasoned long ranger that will help out also..
Thanks again guys...

Freshone,
Don't forget to bring at least one 20-25# set-up for flylining bait for albies when you run into a school going down or up from the Lupe. Yellowfin will probably run from schoolies to 50lbs for the most part with an occasional bigger grade. I agree with Nextfishing champ on the 80-100# gear for dropper loop on the yellowtails. Make sure you button down the drag and hold onto dear life when you get hit by one. Remember.. it doesn't make you a Wimp for using the rails when dropper looping for yellowtail at the lupe.. just don't forget to wear your fishwork mini-skirt.
Gook look.
